According to Moultrie County State’s Attorney Tracy Weaver, a discovery recount was conducted at the courthouse on Tuesday and Wednesday, July 26 and 27. Present were Lisa Ozier and her legal counsel and poll watcher, Linda Qualls and her legal counsel and poll watcher, representatives from the Moultrie County Clerk’s Office including Pam Wittkowski and Jamie Helton, four election judges, Ken Gibson from Liberty Systems, LLC, Weaver and Assistant State’s Attorney Elizabeth Dobson. Weaver said that four precincts were chosen by Ms. Ozier to be reviewed in the discovery recount and they were Dora, Jonathan Creek, Lowe and Whitley. Read More

Moultrie County Democrat Central Committee Selects Candidate to Finish County Clerk Term

Tim Singer, Committee Chairman for the Moultrie County Democrat Committee, announced that the committee is recommending Rita Coleman Florey to serve as the interim Moultrie County Clerk filling Georgia England’s position until the November 22 election is completed.
According to the Statute, “The vacancy shall be filled within 60 days by appointment of the Chairman of the county board with the advice and consent of the county board.” The appointment must be of the same political party as Mrs. England, a Democrat.
Singer said of the appointment, “Mrs. Florey has many years of administrative experience as principal of the Sullivan Elementary School, as well as vast experience in dealing with the public. We believe she will bring stability to the office.” Read More
Mobile Food Pantry

The University of Illinois Extension, in cooperating partnership with Decatur Catholic Charities and Sullivan United Methodist Church, will be having a mobile food pantry on Wednesday, August 24 from 4 to 5 pm at Sullivan United Methodist Church, 216 W. Jefferson, Sullivan, across from the Firehouse. A mobile food pantry delivers a 2 week supply of food per family in rural communities. Any individual or family that does not have a steady food supply qualifies to receive food. No financial information is required to qualify. This distribution is open to all, not only residents of Sullivan. Sign up by Tuesday, August 16 at 4:30 pm by calling the church at 217-728-4436 or 217-855-3933 between 8 am and 1 pm or Mid-Illinois Senior Services, Inc. at 217-728-8521 between 8:30 am and 3:30 pm. Once your form is completed by phone, you will be given a number to bring with you on the day of distribution. If you lose your number, you need to bring identification. The food will be distributed according to household size on Wednesday, August 24 from 4 to 5 pm at the Methodist Church in parking lot across the street.

Car Seat Safety Checks

Moultrie County Birth-3 will be having car seat safety checks on Thursday, August 11 from 9 to 11 am at First United Methodist Church, 216 West Jefferson in Sullivan. Child Passenger Safety technicians Katrina Farris, Director of Early Childhood and Tonya Reynolds, MCUSD #2 Birth-3, a Baby Talk affiliate will be doing safety checks.
Fundraiser for School Supplies

The Old Man and Ms. Judi’s Smokehouse will be having a fundraiser for school supplies for Okaw Valley school students. On August 5 and 6 they will be open from 10:30 am to 6 pm or until they run out. They are located on the corner of West North Street and North Jefferson in Bethany. This is one block south of Casey’s and one block west of Okaw Valley Grade School. They will be serving pulled pork, baked beans and coleslaw.
Arthur-Atwood Lions Club to Sponsor ITPA Tractor Pull

ITPA Tractor and Truck Pull will be held on Friday, August 12, at the fairgrounds in Arthur. The pull will begin at 6:00 p.m. CDT with Classics, 6,850 Pro Farm, Pro Stock Diesel trucks, 9,500 Limited Pro Stock, Pro Stock, and 11,000 Pro Farm. This will be a great combination of noise, smoke, and dust! With the tractor pulls at the Illinois State Fair cancelled for this year and the recent rainout of the pull during the fair, a large crowd is expected. The Arthur – Atwood Lions Club is proud to sponsor the event and will be serving food and drinks. Admission is $15.00 per person for anyone 13 and older. 12 and under are free. Free parking on the grounds. Handicap parking available. Funds raised from the event assist Lions to serve the Arthur, Atwood, Lovington, and Hammond communities to improve health and well-being, strengthen and support those in need through humanitarian services.
Recent Obituaries: H. Leroy Fair
Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 2, 2022 at McMullin-Young Funeral Home, Lovington. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 3, 2022, at the Lovington United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Keller Cemetery, Lovington. Memorials may be made to the Lovington United Methodist Church or to the American Lung Association.
Leroy was born on December 25, 1943, in Lovington; the son of Homer and Maude (Rhodes) Fair. He married Alma M. Beachy on November 27, 1965 in Arthur; she survives. He worked at Progress Industries and MasterBrand Cabinets, both in Arthur. He was a member of the Lovington United Methodist Church and the Lovington Alumni Association. Leroy loved gardening, the St. Louis Cardinals and Illini Sports.
He is survived by his wife, Alma of Lovington; son, Rodney Fair of Grand Junction, CO; daughter, Michelle (Derik) Eaton of Sullivan; grandchildren, Katie Fair, Maggie Fair and David Eaton; brother, Howard Lavon (Jennett) Fair of Lovington; sister, Jane Frederick of Sullivan. Leroy is also survived by his special friend, Dennis Garmon who was like a second son to him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 brother, Lonnie Fair and 1 sister, Shirley Frost.
