The Moultrie County Board unanimously approved an ordinance prohibiting wind farms in Moultrie County during their regular meeting Thursday. Board member Elizabeth Houser was absent.
The board voted to accept the resignation of Larry Baker from the Moultrie County Board and as County Board Chairman. There was also a motion approved to accept the resignation of Moultrie County Engineer Jeff Birch, effective August 31, 2022. Read More

The Okaw Valley school district held graduation ceremonies for the class of 2022 on Saturday, May 14, in the high school gymnasium. This year’s co-valedictorians are Evelyn Ashley and Savannah Hagerman and salutatorian is Amelia Landreth. The class motto is “In ourselves our future lies.”
Superintendent Kent Stauder presented Hall of Fame inductees during the ceremony. For the Volunteer Hall of Fame, inductees were Soo Harris and David Benning. Shawn Creviston was inducted into the Alumni Hall of Fame. Read More

The Elizabeth Titus Memorial Library is preparing to kickoff summer reading with a part on June 3 from 10 am to 2 pm. This is free and open to the public. There will be an inflatable obstacle course and slide, sno cones, s’more making and a craft.
This year’s summer reading theme is Read Beyond the Beaten Path. Summer reading officially starts on Wednesday, June 1. Participants can start registering on Tuesday, May 24 and there will be open registration on June 3 at the party.
The library is looking for volunteers to help at the kickoff party. Volunteers will help monitor the inflatables, the craft table and the sno cones and s’mores. Volunteers can be in sixth grade and up and adults may help as well.
There are 10 weeks of summer reading. This is 10 weeks of earning prizes. Every week they meet their reading goal they can get a new prize. Reading logs will be kept at the library this year and the kids will get stickers to put on their log as they progress.
YA (young adults) will have activities on Thursdays at 2:00 in June. YA is for kids entering 6th-12th grades. They will be making things for the letterboxing activity, fairy lights, and more.
For kids entering kindergarten through 5th grades activities will be held August 1-5. It will be held in the mornings. Exact times will be announced closer to the dates.
They will have a letterboxing activity throughout the summer for the entire family. Letterboxing is similar to geocaching, but no coordinates are given. Instead you will follow clues and solve puzzles to find them. You do not leave a trinket behind. Instead there will be a stamp inside a small waterproof box that you use on a premade card you can get in the library. When you find them all you can come back for a prize. This will start in June also.
In July they will have a free family friendly movie every Friday at 1:00 pm. Popcorn and water is provided. Guests can bring other snacks if they wish along with blankets and pillows to sit with. Chairs will be provided for adults.

The Village of Bethany will have their town cleanup from Thursday, June 2 - Saturday, June 4. Items can be dropped off at the utility building on Water Street. No electronics, paint, tires or kitchen appliances.

The Bethany Townwide Rummage Sale will be held May 20 and 21. Over 25 sales have been confirmed as well as the First Christian Church handing out free sandwiches, baked goods and bottled water both days while supplies last.

The University of Illinois Extension in cooperating partnership with Decatur Catholic Charities and Windsor School District will have a mobile food pantry on Wednesday, June 8 from 4 to 5 pm at Windsor Grade School. A mobile food pantry delivers a 2 week supply of food per family in rural communities. Any individual or family that does not have a steady food supply qualifies to receive food. No financial information is required to qualify. This distribution is open to all, not only residents of Windsor. Sign up must be completed by June 1 by calling 217-774-9546 Monday through Friday from 8 am to Noon. Once your form is completed by phone, you will be given a number to bring with you on the day of distribution. If you lose your number, you need to bring identification. The food will be distributed according to household size on June 8 from 4 pm to 5 pm at the Windsor Grade School cafeteria.

The National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) will conduct its annual national food drive on Saturday, May 14. NALC’s food drive, which was first held in 1983, helps feed millions of Americans.
The Stamp Out Hunger® Food Drive, the country’s largest one-day food drive, provides residents with an easy way to donate food to those in need.
Customers simply leave their donation of non-perishable food items next to their mailbox before the delivery of the mail on Saturday, May 14. Letter carriers will collect these food donations on that day as they deliver mail along their postal routes, and distribute them to local food banks, pantries, shelters and churches. Read More

Sullivan Middle School eighth grader Mae Dawkins was honored on Monday, May 2 at the Illinois Principals Association Student Recognition Breakfast in Springfield at the Wyndham Hotel. Mae was nominated by Mr. Ogle and the faculty of Sullivan Middle School for her outstanding character and leadership. Mae was joined at the event by Mr. Ogle and her mother, Alice Dawkins.
