Okaw Valley Community Unit School District invites all Veterans and their family members to a Veterans Day program at Okaw Valley High School in Bethany on Monday, November 11th. A breakfast will be provided to all who attend beginning at 8:15am in the cafeteria and a short assembly will follow at 9:15am. The assembly will feature the Okaw Valley School District band and chorus students, and keynote speakers.
The students and staff at Okaw Valley thank all Veterans for their acts of courage and devotion to the ideals that have served to guide our nation. We would be honored if you could join us to pay tribute to all the brave men and women who have admirably served our country.

Pictured above is a photo post card of the west side of the Sullivan square which dates no later than December 1926 based on the history of the “Fair Store”. It filed bankruptcy in December 1926 and was sold in January 1927 to Levy Dickerson who opened his store there. Starting to the near left which is the corner of Jefferson and Main Streets is 1. Hughes Shoe Store formally Wyman Shoes 2. Citizens Abstracts 3. Fair Store 4. Overstreet Jewelry 5. Geo. Thompson Grocery, 6. Alumbaugh grocery 7. Mammoth Men’s Clothing Store 8. Haley & Carnine Meat Market and upstairs were offices for McClung & Harsh Real Estate & Insurance. 9. Hall’s Drug & Jewelry shared the 1st National Bank Bldg. The bank had the portion on the corner. Behind the bank on Harrison was the lobby and dining room for the Savoy Hotel. Rooms were in the upstairs of the bank building. Please submit photos to the News Progress for future consideration. Pattie F. Wood, 85, of Lovington, passed away at 11:50 a.m. Wednesday, October 16, 2019 in Mason Point in Sullivan.
Celebration of Life services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Reed Funeral Home in Sullivan with Pastor Rodney Houser officiating. Burial was in Keller Cemetery in Lovington. Read More
Knight’s Volleyball Splits Lincoln Prairie Match Ups

The Knights’ volleyball team split two Lincoln Prairie Conference match ups before entering the Champaign St. Thomas More Tournament Saturday.
In the STM Tournament, Arthur-Lovington-Atwood-Hammond went 1-4.
ALAH defeated Warrensburg but lost to host STM, Mt. Pulaski, Teutopolis and Monticello.
In the tournament, Mackenzi Bowles totaled 19 kills, and Alisha Frederick tallied nineteen assists and four digs. Read More

Three Sullivan cross country runners earned All-Central Illinois Conference honors in the sixth annual championship meet Thursday (17th).
For the girls’ team, freshman Tori Turnbaugh placed sixth with a time of 20:38.89, and senior Katherine Kite ran a 21:08.38 for eighth place to earn all-conference honors.
For the boys’ team, Chase McClure placed eighth with a time 17:57.95 to earn the honor.
The boys’ team placed fifth overall with 95 points. Clinton won the meet with a score of two.
Other Redskin times included Peyton Pool’s 14th place at 18:48.64, Canon West’s 26th at 19:49.07, Paul Bates’ 28th at 19:58.22, Coen Foster’s 30th at 20:20.52 and Dawson Foster’s 45th at 23:29.28.
Sullivan, Bethany and Arthur-Lovington-Atwood-Hammond are scheduled to enter the Shelbyville Regional Saturday.

Bill Crum
William Paul “Bill” Crum, 81, passed from his earthly life to his heavenly home at 12:50 a.m. Thursday, October 17, 2019 in Mattoon Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center. He had been a resident there for the past three years.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, October 21 in McMullin-Young Funeral Home in Sullivan. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery in Oakland. Read More

The Blue Dolphin swim team competed at the annual 2019 Coach Schuber Invitational held in Olympia County, IL. Many athletes took the podium and placed in the top 6 overall for their age groups.

Sullivan Golf Team Culture is About Working Hard and Getting Better

The Sullivan boys’ golf team placed 11th with a score of 353 at the IHSA Class A State Golf Tournament at the Prairie Vista Golf Course in Bloomington Friday and Saturday.
“Going to state as a team is a great accomplishment,” Coach Ben Richter said. “I am very proud of all the hard work these guys have put in this year.
“At the state tournament we had a really good practice round and they had a lot of confidence going into the round on Friday,’ he continued.
One problem was at the tournament the team had a lot of trouble making putts. Read More
Haiti Benefit Auction Friday

The Illinois Haiti Benefit Auction begins Friday, October 25 at the Otto Center in Arthur.
Open house at the Center located one half mile south of Arthur is at 4:00 p.m. with the bake sale operating from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m.
Quilt inspection is from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday.
Supper is served from 4:00 to 7:30 p.m.- Mississippi Catfish meal, dessert and soft serve ice cream (carry out available).
The grounds open at 6:00 a.m. Saturday with breakfast buffet offered from 6:00 to 9:00 a.m. Menu includes eggs, biscuits and gravy, sausage, potatoes, coffee and more.
The all day Bake Sale opens at 7:00 a.m. offering breads, cakes, cinnamon rolls, cookies, donuts, fried pies, noodles, pies and tea rings.
The auction begins at 8:00 a.m. with furniture and specialty items. Tack, tool and miscellaneous auction is at 9:30 a.m. There is also a meat auction.
Lunch is served at 10:00 a.m. and includes chicken and hamburger sandwiches, salad, pizza, homemade pie, soft serve and homemade ice cream, soft pretzels, and drinks.
Sullivan Council Approves Trick or Treat Time, Amends Liquor Ordinance

Sullivan City Council met Oct. 15 at Elizabeth Titus Library establishing 4-9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 31 for Trick or Treating.
In addition, the Sullivan Chamber and Economic Development sponsors safe trick or treating in the business district starting at 4 p.m. with the Halloween parade concluding that event at 6 p.m.
The council amended the Liquor Code, allowing the liquor commissioner/mayor the authority to approve special event liquor sales outside the licensed establishment but inside the city limits.
City Administrator Dan Flannell explained the existing ordinance requires council approval for situations where holders of Class A, B or C licenses wish to have off-site sales. The amended ordinance allows quick approval and is limited to 24 hours. Commissioners Peggy Hargis, Chuck Woodworth, Abbey Sherwood, Mike Fowler and Mayor Richard Glazebrook approved the amendment to the Liquor Code. Read More
