Trail Closures for Firearm Deer Seasons

Lake Shelbyville- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Lake Shelbyville would like to remind public land users of upcoming trail closure dates. Camp Camfield, General Dacey Mountain Bike Trail and the Illini Trail are all closed to any non-hunting users or activities for the duration of first and second firearm deer season as well as muzzleloader season. Trails do not close for archery deer season.

Second Firearm Deer Season - December 3-6, 2020
Muzzleloader Deer Season - December 11-13, 2020

COVID Update

The Moultrie County COVID-19 update for November 21-23, 2020 is 21 additional cases of COVID-19 with ages ranging from 9-80s. The total residents tested positive to date is 808. Total COVID-19 related deaths to date is 10.

Letters to Santa

The Moultrie County News Progress is offering a chance to send letters to Santa.
Santa’s North Pole drop box will be placed in front of the Monroe Street office this week.
Plans are to publish all letters in The News Progress on Wednesday, December 16 to give Santa Claus time to figure out who has been naughty or nice.
Letters may also be sent to santa@newsprogress.com or by mailing to Santa Claus c/o News Progress PO Box 290, Sullivan 61951.
Letters should be received no later than Friday, December 11.

Scholarship Apps Open

The 2021-2022 Lake Land College Foundation scholarship application is available now. Applications for the 2021-2022 academic year are due Feb. 1 at 11:59 p.m.
Students graduating from high school, adults who are enrolling at Lake Land College and current students are encouraged to apply. Students who received a Lake Land College Foundation Scholarship for the current academic year and wish to be considered for a 2021-2022 award must reapply.
To apply, students will need to complete a Laker profile and Intent to Enroll at lakelandcollege.edu/enroll. The student will then receive a welcome packet via mail containing a student ID number and password to access the Laker Hub. Within the Laker Hub, the student can locate the scholarship application button to access and complete the application. New students are advised to allow two weeks for this process.
Applicants will be considered for all foundation scholarships for which they qualify by submitting just one application. Applications will not be accepted after the deadline.
Each year, the Foundation awards students more than $500,000 worth of scholarships in a range of amounts up to $5,000.
Throughout the past 15 years, the Foundation has awarded more than $5 million in scholarships, with close to $530,000 in scholarships going to more than 440 students this academic year.

Ninth Confirmed COVID-19 Related Death

It is with great sadness that the Moultrie County Health Department (MCHD) confirms a ninth COVID-19 related death of a Moultrie County male resident in his 70s.
“We send our deepest condolences to his friends and family, and ask for their privacy during this difficult time,” Angela Hogan, Administrator for the Moultrie County Health Department, said. “The MCHD will release no additional information.”
To date, 703 Moultrie County residents have tested positive for COVID-19, which includes eight previous COVID-19 related deaths.
The MCHD strongly advises individuals and businesses to help reduce the spread of COVID-19 in our communities by using these precautions:
• Watch physical distance and keep six feet from others.
• Wear a mask when in public places.
• Wash hands routinely.
• Above all, stay home if ill.
• Protect yourself with the annual flu vaccine.
Due to the increase in cases across the state, mitigations have been put into place to help slow the spread of COVID-19. Sullivan City Council Election Information

Prospective candidates to fill the unexpired term for the Commissioner of Streets and Public Improvements may pick up an information packet at the Sullivan City Building, 304 S. Hamilton St, Sullivan, on Mondays through Fridays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Due to the current COVID pandemic please call the office at 728-4383 to arrange for packet pick up.The filing date will be December 14, 2020, through December 21, 2020, for placement on the ballot of the Consolidated Election to be held on April 6, 2021.

Holiday Bazaar

Windsor United Methodist Church will be hosting a holiday bazaar on Nov 14 from 8 am to 2 pm. Lunch will be served from 11 am to 2 pm. Food being served will be chili, oyster soup, veggie soup, ham sandwiches and desserts. There will be crafts, baked goods and a country store all day.

Eighth COVID-19 related Death

Food Drive

The Lovington Grade School Student Council is sponsoring a Food Drive Contest during the week of Nov 9-13. Classes will work together to fill a box with unexpired canned goods or non-perishable items. All donations will benefit Christ’s Pantry. On Saturday, Nov 14 from 9-11:30 am they will collect donations from the community and place it in the class box of their choosing. They will be set up downtown, please look for more information on social media throughout the week. The winner will be determined after the community event. The teachers of the winning classes will participate in an ice bucket challenge.

Blood Drive

Spring concert

On Tuesday, April 28th, under the direction of Dr. Ian Kinkley, Band Director, the Sullivan Band Program presented its symphonious Spring Band concert, titled “Evening Escapes,” which showcased the magnificent and diverse talents of the Sullivan 6th, 7th and 8th grade bands, combined with the Sullivan High School Band and Jazz Band.
