Lions Turkey Party is Coming

Turkeys, door prizes and more turkeys are in store for the Lions Turkey Party crowd in November.
The annual Lions Club Turkey Party is Friday, November 8 at the Sullivan American Legion.
Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and Beanie Babies will be given to children 10 and under.
Participants are entitled to one free game with each eyeglasses donation. The American Legion kitchen will be open.
Turkeys, door prizes, and more turkeys can be won as the games begin at 6:30 p.m.
This annual Sullivan Lions Club event helps raise funds for vision impaired, including the Lions eyeglasses program for adults and Lions Kids Camp for children with vision issues.
Sullivan’s Lions focus on local causes by giving $1000 scholarship to a Sullivan High School student in the spring.
Lions donate time and money to Moultrie County Habitat for Humanity, the Sullivan American Legion, Toys for Tots sponsored by Sullivan V.F.W Post 6410 and One Stop Community Christmas.
The Moultrie County Food Pantry receives regular support from the club as well as their participation in the Sullivan Elementary School Day of Giving, which also donates to the food pantry.

OV Schools Honor Veterans

Okaw Valley Community Unit School District invites all Veterans and their family members to a Veterans Day program at Okaw Valley High School in Bethany on Monday, November 11th. A breakfast will be provided to all who attend beginning at 8:15am in the cafeteria and a short assembly will follow at 9:15am. The assembly will feature the Okaw Valley School District band and chorus students, and keynote speakers.
The students and staff at Okaw Valley thank all Veterans for their acts of courage and devotion to the ideals that have served to guide our nation. We would be honored if you could join us to pay tribute to all the brave men and women who have admirably served our country.

Haiti Benefit Auction Friday

The Illinois Haiti Benefit Auction begins Friday, October 25 at the Otto Center in Arthur.
Open house at the Center located one half mile south of Arthur is at 4:00 p.m. with the bake sale operating from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m.
Quilt inspection is from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday.
Supper is served from 4:00 to 7:30 p.m.- Mississippi Catfish meal, dessert and soft serve ice cream (carry out available).
The grounds open at 6:00 a.m. Saturday with breakfast buffet offered from 6:00 to 9:00 a.m. Menu includes eggs, biscuits and gravy, sausage, potatoes, coffee and more.
The all day Bake Sale opens at 7:00 a.m. offering breads, cakes, cinnamon rolls, cookies, donuts, fried pies, noodles, pies and tea rings.
The auction begins at 8:00 a.m. with furniture and specialty items. Tack, tool and miscellaneous auction is at 9:30 a.m. There is also a meat auction.
Lunch is served at 10:00 a.m. and includes chicken and hamburger sandwiches, salad, pizza, homemade pie, soft serve and homemade ice cream, soft pretzels, and drinks.

Dove Lights Candles

Dove invites you to join us for our 19th Annual Candle Lighting Ceremony, “Journey to Justice”. At this service, we will mourn those who have suffered and died through domestic violence and celebrate with the survivors and those working to end the abuse. This ceremony takes place in October as part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
The ceremony will be held Tuesday, October 29, 2019, at the United Methodist Church, 210 W. Jefferson, Sullivan. The service will begin at 7:00 p.m. and will include remarks from coordinator Mary Hughes, music, and the lighting of the candles.

Boo Bash at Sullivan Dance

Sullivan Dance Studio’s Competition Dance Team is hosting a “Kid’s BOO BASH” on Friday, October 25 from 6-8 p.m.
Students only in grades Kindergarten through 4th Grade from area schools are invited to attend. A “Mini BOO BASH” will take place on Saturday October 26 from 9-11 a.m. This event is for children ages 2.5 – 5.
Parents or adult helpers are allowed to stay for the “Mini BOO BASH.” Both events will take place at the Sullivan Dance Studio located on the square in Sullivan.
Our “Not-So-Scary-Halloween Parties” will help raise funds for our dancers’ competition and costume fees. Activities at the events include: dance party, themed crafts, games, photo booth, and Halloween snacks. There is a cost and spots are limited.

Breast Cancer Benefit at VFW

A benefit will be held for Pam Hortenstine from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 3 at the Sullivan VFW.
Pam was diagnosed with breast cancer in June 2019 and has been through surgery and is undergoing chemo.
The #TeamPam sponsored event is offering a chance for friends to gather for food and music while participating in live and silent auctions, as well as 50/50 drawing.

Oktoberfest Has Arrived

Oktoberfest hits the Sullivan square, filling Friday and Saturday with music, art, the smell of chili cooking and loads of fun for the whole family.
The parade opens the festivities at 6:00 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18. Kids corner offers inflatables and bumper cars through Saturday.
The Sullivan FFA pedal tractor pull is 2:00 p.m. on Sat., Oct. 19.
The Northenders play on the main stage beginning at 6:30 p.m. Friday with the Feudin Hillbillies featured in the beer tent at 8: p.m.
Saturday morning the annual Sullivan Fire Protection District Pancake and Sausage Breakfast is from 6 to 10 a.m. in the House of Blues.
Wine tasting is offered at 5 West Lounge from noon to 9:00 p.m.
The chili cook off begins at high noon with judging from 5-7:00 p.m. with winner announced at 7:30 p.m.
Artoberfest winners will also be announced at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
The annual Oktoberfest is a Sullivan Chamber and Economic Development event.

SFPD is Serving P&S Breakfast

The Sullivan Fire Protection District annual Pancake and Sausage Breakfast is from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 19.
Drop by the House of Blues at the corner of Hamilton and Harrison streets in Sullivan where adults and kids alike can enjoy all you can eat pancakes and sausage, cooked up fresh by SFPD volunteers.
Eat in or carry out. Adults eat for a $7.00 donation; children 6-12 years are $4.00 and children five and under eat for free.
In addition to breakfast the fire district is offering five pound boxes of sausage for $20.

Shred Day & Food Drive

CF&H Insurance, First Community Bank of Moultrie County & Sullivan Chamber & Economic Development would like to help you get your documents shredded locally. Shred-It will be providing an on-site shred truck during Oktoberfest from 9:00 am – Noon located in front of First Community Bank of Moultrie County to properly dispose of your documents.
Simply bring the items you need to have shredded to the location listed above along with a non-perishable item or paper product for the local food pantry, and we will have your documents properly destroyed.
You can even watch your items get shredded. Please do not bring items before the actual shred date.
We’re glad to help everyone in the community get their documents “cleaned up” and, at the same time, help our local food pantry get “stocked up.” We look forward to seeing you on October 19th.
*CF&H Insurance, First Community Bank of Moultrie County and Sullivan Chamber & Economic Development cannot be responsible for papers left unattended, so we ask that you stay until your documents are on the shred Truck.

Spring concert

On Tuesday, April 28th, under the direction of Dr. Ian Kinkley, Band Director, the Sullivan Band Program presented its symphonious Spring Band concert, titled “Evening Escapes,” which showcased the magnificent and diverse talents of the Sullivan 6th, 7th and 8th grade bands, combined with the Sullivan High School Band and Jazz Band.
