McDonald’s Construction Begins

McDonald’s Restaurant of Sullivan closes Monday, April 15 to allow for new construction.
Sunday, April 14 McDonald’s will open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, which will be the last day for the old building, owner Angie Matlock explained.
The existing building will be removed to the existing footprint, and a completely new McDonald’s with a dual drive thru will be built in its place. Construction timetable is expected to be seven weeks.

20th Smyser Easter Drama

Smyser Christian Church Student Ministries Easter Drama is a two hour program put on by 30 area high school students at 7 p.m. April 19 and 20.
The 20th annual drama “Believe” will be held at Smyser Christian Church, 1521 Whitley Point Road in Gays.
Because what you believe about Easter determines what you believe about Christmas, the students will take you through what is believed about Jesus’ birth, life, death, and resurrection through the use of skits, dramas, praise music, and various artistic expressions.
Refreshments will be served and a love offering will be taken to support the youth’s summer conferences. RSVP is requested to 752-6896 or at smysercc.org/easter-2019.
Everyone is invited to Easter Worship Services at 8 and 10 a.m. April 21 at the church. Come at 9 a.m. for coffee and donuts and snap a family photo in front of one of the photo booth backgrounds available.

Sullivan Spark Town Hall

The Town Hall Meeting for Sullivan Spark (mapping program) will be Friday, April 26 with doors opening at 5:30 p.m. and presentations starting at 6 p.m. at 1225 Building in Sullivan.
Included from committees are slides/powerpoint presentation; one person from each committee will speak during the town hall presentation; booths representing four goals of Spark; a chance for volunteer sign up sheet for teams. People may give time, talent and treasure.
Check out what Spark is about, enjoy a taste of Sullivan, enter raffles and enjoy. Invite family, friends, and co-workers.

Celebrity Karaoke

Sullivan’s American Legion Post 68 will host a Celebrity Karaoke contest at 8 p.m. Friday, April 12 at the Legion. Admission will be $5.
Area celebrities including representatives from the Sullivan school district, Sullivan fire and police departments, the Moultrie County Sheriff’s Department, the Legion, and the community will battle for bragging rights in the contest.
Contestants, who will come with one prepared song, have been encouraged to wear costumes and appear with backup dancers and singers. Audience members will also be able to purchase singing opportunities before and after the contest.
Money raised at the event will be used to purchase Walk of Honor bricks for the 78 charter members of Post 68. The Walk of Honor will be built this summer around the Legion’s current flagpole. Biographies of charter members will be provided at the event, and people are encouraged to “adopt” charter members by sponsoring bricks.
Information on purchasing bricks for the Walk of Honor may be found on the Legion’s Facebook page or at the Legion.

Easter Egg Hunt Moves

The annual Sullivan Fire Protection District Easter Egg Hunt has moved to Courtyard Estates this year.
The Egg Hunt is at 3 p.m. Easter Sunday, April 21 at Courtyard Estates in Sullivan. This replaces The Courtyard Egg Hunt.

April Quarter Auction

Moultrie County Monthly Quarter Madness will hold their April quarter auction Wednesday, April 10 at Sullivan American Legion. Arthur-Lovington-Atwood-Hammond FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America) is the charity of the month.
Money raised will be used for members to attend FCCLA State Conference and Summer Leadership Academy. ALAH FCCLA has 26 high school members. Vendors at the event will include Scentsy, JBloom Jewelry, Fun with Dips, Tupperware, Longaberger, Pampered Chef, Norwex, Avon, Clever Container, Revere Consignment, different craft vendors and more.
FCCLA plans to have baked goods for sale as well.

Benefit Auction For Beacon

On Friday, April 12 the annual Moultrie County Beacon Benefit Auction begins at 5:30 p.m.at the Otto Center, half mile south of Arthur.
Proceeds go to benefit the Moultrie County Beacon and needs of the clients. Auction items include new furniture, bicycles, toys and games, quilts, tools, wagon, storage building and various certificates.
In addition to the auction an evening meal is served from 4:00-7:00 p.m. with carryouts available. All day bake sale, soft pretzels and much more.
The Moultrie County Beacon is a non-profit agency providing services to individuals with developmental disabilities and mental illness.

First Sunday Services

Members of the Sullivan Area Ministerial Association are initiating satellite afternoon services at four local care facilities.
Area churches will begin conducting 30-minute worship services the first Sunday of each month in the afternoon. The services will begin Sunday, April 7.
Times and locations:
1:30 p.m. at Aspen Creek conducted by Elim Springs Church of Jesus Christ
2 p.m. at Courtyard Estates conducted by Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Bethany
2:30 p.m. at Eastview Terrace conducted by Elim Springs Church of Jesus Christ
2:30 p.m. at Sullivan Health Care and Rehabilitation conducted by First Christian Church, Sullivan
Family, friends and residents are welcome to attend any of the services at the homes and stay after to visit. All services will start promptly.
Come together to worship in prayer, scripture, a brief message and song, followed by more Christian fellowship with loved ones.

Dr. Dust Speaks Dine with a Doc

Senior Education Ministries, Inc. in partnership with the Sullivan community has scheduled Dine with a Doc ® -Sullivan on the first Tuesday of every month from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Max J. Knight Community Building Banquet Hall Mason Point) located at One Masonic Way in Sullivan.
This month Dr. Glen Dust MD with Sullivan Family Care is the presenter.
Dr. Dust was born in Rockford and raised in Effingham. He attended St Anthony schools and graduated in 1974. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology at Eastern Illinois University in 1977 and his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Illinois in 1981. He completed his Family Medicine Residency in Grand Rapids, Michigan and became Board Certified in 1984. He became a Fellow in the American Academy of Family Practice in 1988.
Dr. Dust has been a medical director at nursing homes and a home for the developmentally disabled. He was a clinical associate professor at SIU Decatur Family Practice Residency Program for more than 15 years and was twice awarded ‘Teacher of the Year’. He has enjoyed helping to train nurse practitioners, physician assistants, medical students and family physicians. He has been a physician for Physician’s Choice Wellness, a medically monitored weight loss program. He is currently President of the Board of the Moultrie County Health Department.

Special Session for Water Plant

A special meeting of the Sullivan City Council will be held Monday, April 8 at 6:45 p.m. at the Elizabeth Titus Memorial Library, 2 West Water Street in Sullivan.
The purpose of the special meeting is for a public meeting regarding the proposed construction of a 1.5 MGD water treatment plant. The public is invited to attend and comment on such issues as economic and environmental impacts, service area, alternatives to the project or any other pertinent issues.

Spring concert

On Tuesday, April 28th, under the direction of Dr. Ian Kinkley, Band Director, the Sullivan Band Program presented its symphonious Spring Band concert, titled “Evening Escapes,” which showcased the magnificent and diverse talents of the Sullivan 6th, 7th and 8th grade bands, combined with the Sullivan High School Band and Jazz Band.
