SAIL Offers PA Orientation

Soyland Access to Independent Living (SAIL) will hold a Personal Assistant Orientation for people interested in working as a personal assistant.
The orientation is 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 26 at the Shelbyville SAIL Office, 1604 West Main, Suite 100 in Shelbyville.
There will be a break for lunch. Personal assistants are employed by people with disabilities to perform household chores and personal care tasks in their homes and are paid by the state of Illinois through the Department of Rehabilitation program.
Participants in the orientation must arrive by 10 a.m., bring their driver’s license or State ID and Social Security card and be prepared to fill out an application with references.
SAIL is a fragrance free facility, and those wearing fragrances will not be allowed to attend the orientation.

Sullivan Celebrates

Sullivan 4th of July Celebration begins June 30 and runs through July 4th in Wyman Park.
Conner Family Amusements returns featuring a Ferris wheel; carnival action is from 1-5 p.m. Saturday and again from 6-10 p.m. (Sunday through Tuesday 5-10)
The 4th of July parade circles the square at noon with a watermelon eating contest, sack races and turtle races kicking off in Wyman Park beginning at 2 p.m.
A huge fireworks display is over Wyman Lake beginning at dusk.
The annual celebration is brought to the city of Sullivan thanks to the efforts of the Sullivan American Legion Post #68 and the generosity of Sullivan area merchants.

New County Plat Book

The new 2018 edition of the Moultrie County Plat Book is now available for purchase at the Moultrie County Farm Bureau office (217-728-4214) located at 1102 W. Jackson Street or the Moultrie County SWCD office (217-728-7921 ext. 3) located at 1412A S. Hamilton in Sullivan.
There will also be Premium Wall Maps available for purchase. For more information contact one of the offices.
Traditional landownership maps by township and range, aerial view maps and historical 1913 landowner maps are featured side-by-side in a tri-fold layout for easy reference/comparison.

J. Leonard Brown Scholars

The J. Leonard Brown Scholarship committee has announced the 2018 recipients.

They are Ryan Gould, Dalton City - $2177; Madison Dickens, Sullivan - $1500; and Laine Cameron, Sullivan - $500.

The scholarship committee appreciates all the students who applied.

Post 429 Golfs for Scholarships

Lovington American Legion Post 429 is holding a golf outing to benefit the high school scholarships program on Saturday, August 4 with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start at Norton Knolls Golf Course in Oakland.

The four person scramble/best ball format includes cart, refreshments, lunch, cash awards and more. Hole sponsorships are still available. For more information contact Travis Wilson at 217-259-8690; George Clark at 217-493-4235 or Kenny Crossman at 217-620-6702.

The American Legion, Sons of American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary work together to sponsor this fund-raising community event.

Smyser Christian Church Offers VBS

Smyser Christian Church will offer Vacation Bible School Monday, 6-8:30 p.m. July 23 through Thurs., July 26 at 1521 Whitley Point Road in Gays. There is no fee.

Children ages K through fifth grade may enjoy music, games, snacks and stories centered on the theme “Incredible Faith”. (Sixth-eighth grades meet at the same time but do out-of-house activities.) Participants must preregister at www.smysercc.org or contact 217-752-6896.

There will be a cook out, short VBS program and a family puppet show from Holy Hands Puppet Ministry 6:30-8:30 p.m. Friday night.

Come Join the Fight for Huck

Join the fight at 4 p.m.-? Saturday, June 23 at the American Legion Post 68 in Sullivan.

A benefit in honor of Richard “Huck” Huckstep is being held to aid him in his fight against throat cancer.

Huckstep has entered this battle the with same determination and courage that he did fighting for our country in Vietnam as an infantryman serving in the Marine Corp.

A meal by donation will be served beginning at 5 p.m. Also included at the benefit will be a cash bar, live auction at 6:30, silent auction with winners announced at 8:30 p.m., bake sale, meat board, pull tabs, 50/50 drawing and a raffle at 9 p.m. for a Henry Golden Boy .22 Magnum rifle.

Entertainment will also be included.

Proceeds will go to help Huckstep with medical and personal expenses as he fights this battle.

Townwide Rummage

The Sullivan Townwide Rummage Sales are Friday & Saturday, June 8 and 9. The Boy Scouts cookout will be held both days on the Sullivan IGA parking lot.

The annual townwide rummage is sponsored by First Community Bank of Moultrie County, Sullivan IGA and the News Progress.

Spring concert

On Tuesday, April 28th, under the direction of Dr. Ian Kinkley, Band Director, the Sullivan Band Program presented its symphonious Spring Band concert, titled “Evening Escapes,” which showcased the magnificent and diverse talents of the Sullivan 6th, 7th and 8th grade bands, combined with the Sullivan High School Band and Jazz Band.
