Moultrie-Sullivan Fair June 22-23

Preparations are underway for the Moultrie-Sullivan Fair June 22-23.

On May 5, approximately 40 people showed up with rakes, shovels, and other miscellaneous tools along with four tractors with scoops to prepare the Moultrie Sullivan fairgrounds.

Many hands make light work; within a couple of hours, the fairgrounds are now almost ready for the 2018 Moultrie Sullivan Fair. Those with questions may reach the fair board members by email at moultriesullivanfair@yahoo.com.

Ninth Annual Amish Country Tractor Cruise

The 9th Annual Amish Country Tractor Cruise is Saturday, June 16 beginning in Arthur.

A 48-mile cruise will take riders on a picturesque cruise through the Heart of Illinois Amish Country that includes the communities of Arthur, Chesterville, Garrett, Atwood, Voorhies, and Hammond.

Registration for the cruise will begin at 6 a.m. at Yoder’s Kitchen located on IL 133 in Arthur and departs at 8 a.m.

A rest stop will be at the Harris Agricultural Museum in Atwood, and lunch will be served by Terry Warren at Gingerich Farms prior to returning to Arthur at approximately 3:30 p.m.  Read More

Miss Moultrie-Douglas Pageant

Miss Moultrie-Douglas Fair pageant is accepting applications.

Any young ladies who would like to participate in the 2018 Miss Moultrie-Douglas pageants - Miss (16-21), Jr Miss (11-14), Little Miss (4-6) should contact Sandy Hoke at 493-3583 or visit the website www.moultriedouglascountyfair.com and download the applications.

Deadline for turning in applications is June 8. The new Miss Moultrie-Douglas will receive a $2000 scholarship. Scholarships will also be given to the first and second runners-up.

Bethany Plans Car Show

The Bethany Celebration car show is Saturday, June 23 in Crowder Park in Bethany.

Registration begins at 11 a.m. with awards at 2:30 p.m. All vehicles are welcomed. It is hosted by Earth Scrapes.

Quilts, Spinning Wool & More

Organizers of the Sheep to Wool to Quilt Event, Saturday, June 2, at the new site of the Illinois Amish Heritage Center near Chesterville are pleased with the progress in restoring the Schrock House with final painting, front yard floral plantings, and parking lot construction nearly completed.

Troye Kauffman, chairman of the event, announced that an 1890 era suit worn by Daniel Schrock, the builder of the Schrock House, will be on display. In addition, the 1840’s era Campbell family quilt made entirely by hand from locally produced fabric will also be on display.

Brian Karrick, former director of Historic Farming Operations at Lincoln Log Cabin State Park, will be on hand shearing sheep as well as demonstrating more modern technology used in shearing sheep.

The actual spinning wheel brought to Illinois by Mose Yoder in 1865 will be on display. Other spinning wheels and looms will be on display with demonstrations and “hands on” opportunity to learn this ancient craft. Quilting demonstrations will also be offered throughout the day.

A petting zoo with baby lambs, goats, calves, a pony, ducks, chickens and a peacock will be available for children to enjoy. Pony rides will be offered.

The kitchen of Doris Yoder will have homemade cinnamon rolls and coffee starting at 9 a.m. Homemade chicken and noodles, mashed potatoes, green beans and pies will be available for lunch.

“This kick-off event for the 2018 season will be delightfully educational, visually rich, and a gustatory pleasure for all who attend,” proclaims Wilmer Otto, chairman of the Illinois Amish Heritage Center Board of Directors.

There is no admission to this event; however, donations will be greatly appreciated. The Illinois Amish Heritage Center is located just off Rt. 57, nine miles west of Arcola, through Chesterville on State Road 133; from Arthur, three miles east on State Road 133.

Airplane Rides Offered At Benefit Cookout

Anyone donating $25 or more at the June 2 Cookout Benefit for Pastor Brandon Zoll will be offered an airplane ride by John William Durbin. The ride will be over Mason Point and the lake.

The cookout is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 2 in the Sullivan IGA parking lot.

Pastor Zoll is recovering from an aggressive form of brain cancer, and all proceeds will be given to the Zoll family to help defray mounting medical expenses. The event is sponsored by the Sullivan Ministerial Association.

The rides will be available after June 2, and contact/scheduling information will be given to the donors at the cookout.

Featured at the cookout will be the usual rib eyes, brats and pork chop sandwiches along with soft drinks.

Lovington Ready for Junefest

The Lovington Junefest Fish Fry is from 4:30 p.m. - 7 p.m. Saturday, June 16 in Tom Conn Park.

Sponsored by the Lovington Community Club with support from the village of Lovington and fireworks committee, events run from 4-8 p.m. including Collage of Faith, Steve Fleming, Dennis Garmon, Angie Krapf, Keith Wood’s group and Young at Heart.

Bounce houses are provided by Okaw Farmer’s Coop. Shopping is available in the park including cotton candy, Kim’s Craftiness, Lularoe, Lipsense, Saving Grace Signs, Shawnee Communications, Three French Hens and Tupperware.

Fireworks begin at dusk at the old football field. The Walkers will sell kettle corn and lemonade shake-ups. Veterans eat free. Bring a lawn chair and enjoy the show.

Coles-Moultrie Electric elections

The Coles-Moultrie Electric Cooperative is holding director elections beginning Monday, May 28 through Tuesday, June 12.

Members of the seven member board are elected to three year terms and must reside in the cooperative district. Voting is on the Smart Hub App online or by the paper ballot mailed to Coles-Moultrie Electric Cooperative members.

Of the 9500 members, 8000 customers are residential, 850 small commercial and Mid-State Tank in Sullivan is among the large commercial accounts served. Besides Coles and Moultrie counties the coop also serves customers in Clark, Cumberland, Douglas, Edgar, Piatt and Shelby counties.

Signs for the upcoming Spinning Event June 2 at the Illinois Amish Heritage Center are important to direct traffic and visitors to the area.

To those mowing the roadsides we request you put the signs back up after mowing is complete. If a sign is missing please call 543-2232. Thank you for helping make this a successful event that brings visitors to our area.

On Tuesday, April 28th, under the direction of Dr. Ian Kinkley, Band Director, the Sullivan Band Program presented its symphonious Spring Band concert, titled “Evening Escapes,” which showcased the magnificent and diverse talents of the Sullivan 6th, 7th and 8th grade bands, combined with the Sullivan High School Band and Jazz Band.
