Catholic Charities of Decatur is offering A Matter of Balance: Coaches Training on Monday, July 23, 9 a.m.-5.p.m. at Mid-Illinois Senior Services in Sullivan.
The class is free and lunch provided. A Coaches Manual will be provided to all completing the class.
Chances are everyone knows someone who has fallen or who is afraid of falling. A Matter of Balance is a proven program designed to help people manage concerns about falls and increase physical activity. Decatur Catholic Charities is looking for volunteers to help provide this program in Moultrie County.
A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns About Falls is conducted in eight two-hour sessions and uses group discussion, problem–solving strategies, videos and gentle physical exercise. Older adults learn positive coping methods to reduce fear of falling and remain active and independent.
A Matter of Balance coaches help participants become more confident about managing falls by believing that they can increase their strength, find ways to reduce falls, and protect themselves if they do fall. In addition, participants report that they have increased the amount they exercise on a regular basis.
A Matter of Balance coaches need good communication and interpersonal skills, enthusiasm, dependability and a willingness to lead small groups of older adults. Coaches also need to be able to lead low to moderate level exercise.
Contact Becky Burkham at 217-428-3458, ext. 240 to register or for more information.

Sullivan’s 4th of July Celebration begins June 30 and runs through July 4th in Wyman Park with a Ferris Wheel featured at the carnival.
Conner Family Amusements, Inc. is setting up a 55 foot Ferris wheel, requested by the Sullivan American Legion last year.
The giant wheel joins a variety of family friendly rides and amusements provided by Conner Amusements.
Carnival action begins June 30 from 1-5 p.m. Saturday and again from 6-10 p.m. (Sunday through Tuesday 5-10)
The Beardstown based company is bringing their family friendly carnival back for a second year.
The 4th of July parade circles the square at noon with a watermelon eating contest, sack races and turtle races kicking off in Wyman Park beginning at 2 p.m.
A huge fireworks display is over Wyman Lake beginning at dusk.
The annual celebration is brought to the city of Sullivan thanks to the efforts of the Sullivan American Legion Post #68 and the generosity of Sullivan area merchants.
