Moultrie County Honors Statehood

An Illinois Flag Raising Ceremony will be held in the county of Moultrie at 11:45 a.m. Monday, December 4 on the courthouse lawn.

In case of inclement weather, activities will be held inside the courthouse on the first floor of rotunda.

The event will help kick off Illinois’ yearlong bicentennial celebration

Dec. 4, 2017 to Dec. 3, 2018 and recognition as the 21st state in the union (Dec. 3, 1818).

Area mayors, police and fire chiefs and county officials will attend with the American Legion Honor Guard presenting the colors.

Pastor Don Lusk of the Southern Baptist Church will present the prayer with county board chairman Dave McCabe reading the proclamation.

Sound System by Todd Fultz will provided the Illinois State Song while raising the state bicentennial flag and America the Beautiful at the close of the ceremony.  A brief reception will be held in the rotunda of the Moultrie County Courthouse following the event.

Sullivan Fire Dist. Promotes

With the future retirement of Asst. Chief Arlon Long of the Sullivan Fire Department, the opening was filled by candidate Matthew Cummings.

This open position has also created the need for promotions within the Sullivan Fire Department. Shannon Miller has moved to an open captain’s position that was caused by the promotion of Larry Edwards to the asst. chief’s position.

Edwards is currently working as the interim asst. chief until the official retirement of asst. chief Long on December 15 at which time Edwards will become the official asst. chief of the Sullivan Fire Protection District.

Miller has been with the Sullivan Fire District since November 2003. He started as a volunteer and was hired full time on July 5, 2005.

Cummings is a Sullivan resident and graduated from Sullivan High School in 2002. He has been a volunteer with the Sullivan Fire District since April 4, 2011.

Santa Workshop Benefits Dove

Santa’s Workshop is a fundraiser for Dove’s Moultrie County Domestic Violence Program.

Join in the family fun at Santa’s Workshop, 10:00 a.m-3:00 p.m. Saturday, December 2, at the American Legion located at 8 East Strain Street in Sullivan.

Santa will be present for pictures and visits before and after the city parade.

There will be a bake sale for holiday goodies to take home and a 50/50 drawing.

Many items will be available during the silent auction.

Along with visiting Santa, there will be crafting fun for the kids, including crafting tables to make items to take home. Treats will be available to purchase that day.

This program is supporting the Moultrie County Domestic Violence Program and is sponsored by Moultrie County CADV, Committee Against Domestic Violence. For more information call 728-9303.

Sullivan Township board

The monthly meeting of the Sullivan Township board of trustees is the second Thursday of the month at 6 p.m. Meetings are held at the Sullivan Township office, 518 South Market St. in Sullivan.

Family Reading Night at Schools

Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White is encouraging families in Illinois to read together Thursday, Nov. 16, for Illinois’ annual Family Reading Night.

Sullivan Elementary School is participating with “Books are Better than the Movie” theme.

The Illinois Library Association’s iREAD theme is “Reading by Design” with Little Elliot continuing to serve as the theme.

Thousands of colorful posters and bookmarks have been distributed by the Illinois State Library to libraries, schools and literacy programs across the state to promote Family Reading Night events.

“This is a night when families are urged to turn off televisions, computers, phones, video games and other electronic devices and spend time reading together,” White said. “Reading together creates a positive learning environment and helps children develop language skills, comprehension and a love for reading that can last a lifetime.”

This is the 26th year that the secretary of state’s office has sponsored Family Reading Night. All events are free and open to the public. Contact your local library for events taking place in your community.

Sullivan Plans Old Fashioned Christmas

Sullivan’s Old Fashioned Christmas Downtown celebration is set for 4-7 p.m. Friday, December 8.

The Sullivan Chamber and Economic Development encourages those planning to attend to dress warmly since the activities are outdoors.

Included for participants to enjoy are strolling carolers, carriage rides, the Hardy Reindeer, visits with Santa and lots of shopping with stores open until 7 p.m.

Dane Eadie Benefit at VFW

The Dane Eadie benefit is Saturday, Nov. 25 at Sullivan VFW Post 6410 with doors opening at 4 p.m.

Live music is by Coalshaft with the event highlighted by a silent auction, a live auction at 7 p.m., raffles and a $500 Atwood Armory gift certificate given as grand prize.

A BB pork, potato salad, baked bean and dessert meal is offered which will be served at 5 p.m.

Eadie is a self-employed contractor who recently had vascular bypass surgery and is unable to work. All proceeds will go to medical bills and living expenses.

Windsor Woman Wins a Million Dollars

Lisa Doss of Windsor won $1 million from a scratch-off lottery ticket according to the Illinois Lottery.

Doss plans to invest the money, which she opted to take in a lump sum of $600,000, the lottery said in a news release.

She won the prize playing the $300,000,000 Cash Spectacular scratch-off game.

Doss had previously won two $1,000 prizes from the game, which costs $10 to play.

The winning ticket was sold at the EK Petro Mart in Windsor. For selling the winning ticket the business received $10,000, one percent of the overall prize.

Highway Church of Christ Gospel

The Highway Church of Christ in Sullivan is featuring Phil Sanders during the Nov 12-15 Jesus, Our Hope gospel meeting.

Sanders is host of In Search of the Lord’s Way, a nationally broadcast television ministry seen on Dish channel 239, Directtv channel 307, WGN America Sunday at 6:00 a.m. as well as SearchTVMinistry on YouTube.

Topics included in the gospel sessions Sunday, Nov. 12 are The Essence of Hope, Jesus and the Cross, Jesus and His Words at 9:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and 6 p.m.; Nov. 13 Jesus and His Church; Nov. 14 Jesus and Salvation; Nov. 15 Jesus and His Promises.

On Tuesday, April 28th, under the direction of Dr. Ian Kinkley, Band Director, the Sullivan Band Program presented its symphonious Spring Band concert, titled “Evening Escapes,” which showcased the magnificent and diverse talents of the Sullivan 6th, 7th and 8th grade bands, combined with the Sullivan High School Band and Jazz Band.
