Sullivan Twp Upgrades Cemeteries

News Progress Posted on May 31, 2017 by webmasterMay 30, 2017

•May 31, 2017•

Sullivan Township cemeteries’ records have been updated and are now accessible through the Gravediscover website.

Last year the Sullivan Township Cemetery board of trustees decided to transfer cemetery records to a computer based program.

All the original records were kept on paper with trustees worried that if those were destroyed, there would be nothing to go by.

With the cemetery having no full time employees it has taken about a year to get everything entered. At this time everything is entered based on those original records.

The site may be accessed at https://gravediscover.com/

For each gravesite the name, picture of tombstone, deed and obituary (if on record) are displayed. The township may upload pictures and other information by submitting to sullivancemetery@gmail.com. Trustees are reminding patrons this still is a work in progress, and they hope to keep improving the site.

Alex Menke has done much work in getting this program up and going and Judy Sumner has provided all the information on the cemeteries that she has.

Sullivan Township Cemetery trustees voted to make some improvements at the cemeteries for this year.

All the drives are going to be redone as well as flag poles and fences replaced and repaired. The improvements are all financed with funds the cemetery has saved.

Earlier this year the cemetery trustees voted to lower the tax levy for the township cemeteries.

Sullivan Township oversees eight cemeteries including Camfield, Carter-Ellis, Hampton, Liberty, Oak Grove, Pea, Souther, and Hampton Yarnell.

Moultrie Co. Real Estate Tax Bills Mailed

News Progress Posted on May 31, 2017 by webmasterMay 30, 2017

•May 31, 2017•

Moultrie County real estate taxes were mailed May 26. The first installment is due June 30, 2017 and the second installment on September 1, 2017.

Residents should look over their tax bills and make sure all of the information is correct. Read the back of the tax bill. It is the responsibility of the property owner to report all address changes to the assessor’s office at 728-4951.

Assessment and exemption questions should be directed to the supervisor of assessments office.

Taxes may be paid at any bank in Moultrie County, Scott State Bank and First Mid-Illinois Bank & Trust in Mt. Zion and online at www.govtechtaxpro.com. The collector’s office accepts postmark date of payment so payments may be mailed to Moultrie County Collector, 10 S. Main Suite 10, Sullivan, IL. 61951. Those waiting to mail their payment on the due date may want to have the post office hand cancel the stamp. Post-dated checks are not accepted. If a receipt is desired when mailing payments, include a self-addressed stamped envelope and the entire tax bill. Payments may also be made in the county collector’s office on the second floor of the courthouse. If the original tax bill is not available, a $1 duplicate bill fee will be charged. Those who have their tax bill and are paying by check may pay in the planning office on the first floor. Their hours are subject to changes but normally are Monday-Friday 8:30-12 and 1-4:30. Credit card payments are accepted online only.

After the due dates, there is a penalty charge of 1-1/2 percent per month or any part of a month in which the installment remains delinquent.

Those receiving their tax bill and the taxes are to be paid by a mortgage/escrow company must forward a copy of the bill to the company for a timely payment.

Failure to receive a tax bill does not relieve a taxpayer from their tax liability. Homeowners who do not receive a tax bill or have any questions should call the treasurer’s office at 728-4032.

New Voter Cards Mailed

News Progress Posted on May 24, 2017 by webmasterMay 23, 2017

•May 24, 2017•

Registered voters in Moultrie County will receive new Voter Registration Cards within the next week. As required by law, the county clerk’s office is in the process of completing a purge of Moultrie County voters. County Clerk Georgia England explained that a purge is done to help maintain voter registrations by keeping them current and up-to-date and to eliminate voters who are deceased or have moved from Moultrie County. Jonathan Creek Precinct, Marrowbone 1 and 2 Precincts, and Sullivan 3 Precinct voters received new Voter Registration Cards at the time their polling location was changed and will not receive new cards at this time.

England urges voters to check their voter’s card and familiarize themselves with their districts and polling location. Voter’s should sign the new card and destroy the old card.

England is asking for voters’ assistance in returning Voter Registration cards that were delivered to individuals who no longer live at the address where the card was delivered. Should a household receive a Voter ID card for a member of their family or for an individual who once resided at that address but no longer does, mark on the Voter ID card “NOT AT THIS ADDRESS “. If you know the address to where the individual has moved write that on the card also. Place the card in the mail to be returned to the county clerk’s office. No additional postage is required. It is important that these cards be returned to the clerk’s office and not just destroyed, nor should they be given to the person listed on the card who does not live in that household. If the addressee on the card is deceased, notify the county clerk’s office in writing. The sole purpose of a purge is to have correct voter data for the election process.

Also, if an individual’s address has been changed by municipality or post office action, inform the county clerk’s office of said changes. England says that if a person had a Rural Route Box number that was changed by 9-1-1 addressing but their new voter card reflects an incorrect address, her office needs to be informed.

Registered voters who do not receive a voter’s card by June 12 should notify the clerk’s office at 728-4389.

England would like to reiterate the importance to change voter registration information whenever a person changes their name or moves, even if the move is across the street. If the address or name change is not made in a timely fashion before an election is held, the voter may be prohibited from voting a full ballot at the polls or may be required to Grace Period Register and vote at the County Clerk’s office.

The next election will be the General Primary March 20, 2018. If an individual is not registered to vote, now is the time to do so. Registration may be done in the county clerk’s office, with precinct committeemen and at all Moultrie County libraries. For information regarding registration qualifications call the county clerk’s office or visit their website at moultriecountyil.com
