In the January 25 issue of the News Progress an error was made in the page three story entitled Bethany Church Families. Pastor Tracy Siegman is the pastor of the First Christian Church of Bethany. She was incorrectly identified as the Presbyterian Church pastor. We apologize for the error.

If a child is between the ages of birth to five years old the Sullivan School District and Project H.E.L.P. (Helping Educate Little People) will offer free preschool screenings February 27 and 28.
Screenings are at First United Methodist Church, 210 West Jefferson in Sullivan. The free preschool screening is to see how a child is developing in the areas of concepts, motor, speech and language.
A vision and hearing screening is also provided. The free developmental screening lasts about one hour. Call Sullivan Elementary School at 728-2321 for an appointment or more information.

The city of Sullivan is holding a public meeting Tuesday, Feb 14 for the proposed Tax Increment Financing (TIF) District IV.
Held at the Elizabeth Titus Memorial Library the city will advise the public taxing districts having real property in the redevelopment project area, taxpayers who own property in the redevelopment project area, and residents in the area its intent to prepare a new TIF district and designate a Redevelopment Project Area.
This is the opportunity for public comment on the project proposal south of the city.

Citizens who are not registered to vote and cannot leave their home or nursing home facility because of a permanent physical disability may arrange for voter registration and voting by contacting the Moultrie County Clerk’s office.
The last day to register to vote before the April 4, 2017 Consolidated Election is Tuesday, March 7 with the exception of grace period registrations and transfers between March 8 through election day.
Anyone may register at the county clerk’s office, Moultrie County Courthouse, 10 S. Main in Sullivan from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. However, if a person is unable to come to the courthouse, they may call the county clerk’s office and arrangements for registration will be made.
All polling locations in Moultrie County are accessible to the elderly and persons with disabilities. Voting aids and assistance are available, if needed, in marking the ballot. If for some reason a person is unable to go to the polls on election day, they may call the clerk’s office and arrange for a Vote by Mail ballot. The last day a Vote by Mail ballot may be mailed out is Thursday, March 30, 2017. The last day to Early Vote in person at the county clerk’s office is April 3, 2017 with the exception of Grace Period Registration and Voting.

Elizabeth Inman of Sullivan made the fall dean’s list at McKendree University in Lebanon.
Inman is the daughter of Jill Inman of Sullivan and Michael Inman of Charleston and is a 2014 graduate of Sullivan High School.
McKendree University students earn President’s List recognition by maintaining a perfect 4.0 grade point average. The Dean’s list requires a grade point average of 3.6 or higher.

Windsor Jr./Sr. High School has announced their December Students of the Month. Gillian Sanders, daughter of Greg and Heidi Sanders, is the high school recipient. She is involved in basketball, yearbook, FFA, student council, art club and is senior class president. Sanders plans to attend Lake Land College to study criminal justice. The Junior High honor went to Madison Pfeiffer, a seventh grader, who is the daughter of Stacy Quigley and Tony Pfeiffer. She plays volleyball and softball.

To spread awareness and motivate proaction, the Moultrie County Health Department will be receiving 100 radon test kits.
Individuals wishing to test their homes should contact the Moultrie County Health Department to obtain a kit. All costs for the kits, postage, testing and results will be provided free to the individuals who obtain and use the kits provided by the Health Department.
Radon, a colorless, odorless radioactive gas, comes from naturally occurring uranium in soil and is the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers. The only way to detect this toxic gas is by testing for it.
Test kits are available at the county health department and local extension office and may be purchased at hardware or home improvement stores. In addition, the Illinois Emergency Management Agency can provide you with a list of certified labs that sell kits and professionals who can test for you. You may call the IEMA at 1-800-325-1245 or visit them online at radon.illinois.gov.
If a home tests positive for radon, the MCHD will assist individuals in locating professionals who can help remedy the situation. Lowering the effects of radon in homes is an easy and effective method for reducing the risk of cancer to the people who live there.

The Illinois Sheriffs’ Association announces that it will be awarding more than $54,500.00 in college scholarships throughout the state of Illinois to students wishing to pursue higher education during the 2017-2018 academic year.
The scholarships are to be applied to tuition, books and fees only. The student must be enrolled full-time at a certified institution of higher learning within the state of Illinois.
Moultrie County sheriff Chris Sims will be awarding one scholarship in the amount of $500.00.
There will be no restriction on any applicant by reason of race, age, creed, color, sex or national origin. The only limitations are as follows:
• Applicants must be permanent Illinois residents
• Scholarships must be utilized at institutions of higher learning within the state of Illinois
• Students must be enrolled as a full-time student during the 2017-2018 school year (excluding summer session).
Applications are now available at the local sheriff’s office or on the ISA website www.ilsheriff.org. Students must complete the application; answer the essay question and return all documentation to the sheriff’s office in their permanent county of residence by March 15, 2017 (must be postmarked by this date).
