Scholastic Bowl win for SHS

Sullivan High School Scholastic Bowl started November 2 with a win against Tuscola 170-90.

Ryan Baker led the team with six tossups. In the second game Sullivan lost to St. Teresa 180-100. Baker had three tossups followed by Luke Delong and Grace Mauck with one each.

The JV had a great start going 2-0 on the night. The first match against Tuscola was 200-110 led by Winchester Phelps with four tossups.

The second match against St. Teresa was very close at 240-210. Phelps had six tossups followed by Lindsay Jones with two and Katie Webb with one.

This Sunday, November 1 marks the end of daylight savings time. At 2 a.m. Sunday morning clocks should be set back one hour.

Daylight saving time in the United States is the practice of setting the clock forward by one hour during the warmer part of the year so that evenings have more daylight and mornings have less.

Bethany Halloween Celebration

In Bethany trick or treating throughout the village is from 6-8 p.m. Saturday, October 31.

Also beginning at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Okaw Valley Elementary School is the Halloween parade and costume judging contest.

Prizes will be award the top three categories plus a best overall prize.

Treat bags will be given to every participant.

Courthouse Luncheon

To commemorate the end of Cancer Awareness Month the Moultrie County Courthouse staff is offering a soup and sandwich luncheon from 11:30 - 1:30 Friday, October 30 in the county board meeting room.

“We felt like this would be a good way to close out Cancer Awareness Month,” County Clerk Georgia England said.

“We have a couple of employees who are in remission and several of us are close to someone struck down this year,” she continued, noting the luncheon is free with any donations going directly to Cancer Awareness.

Included on the menu are three kinds of soup, a variety of sandwiches and desserts. Everyone is encouraged to join the courthouse employees for lunch on Friday.

Halloween Celebrated

Halloween in Lovington will be celebrated Friday, October 30. Safe trick of treating at businesses runs from 4:30 - 6:30 p.m. with residential treating from 5:30 - 8:30 p.m.

On Saturday, October 31 a costume judging will be held at the First Church of God Life Center beginning at 4 p.m.

Anyone from infant to high school age qualifies for the judging contest. Lovington Community Club is providing hot dogs and chips. The Lovington Park Board is providing drinks and desserts.

Findlay Halloween

The village of Findlay has trick of treating 5-7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31. On Friday, Oct. 30 the American Legion Auxiliary is hosting a Halloween supper from 5-7 p.m. with a parade and costume contest featured.

Menu includes BBQ, chili, cole slaw, potato salad, sandwiches, desserts, soda, iced tea and coffee.

Vets Appreciation Luncheon Nov. 16

Mid Illinois Senior Services and Peace Meal is hosting a Veterans Appreciation luncheon Monday, Nov. 16 beginning at 11:30 a.m.

Veterans and their spouses eat free. Everyone is encouraged to enjoy the 11:30 meal for $3.50. The meal includes ham and beans with cornbread. A sign up sheet is available at the Senior Center.

Okaw Valley Schools Honor Veterans

The Okaw Valley School District invites all veterans and their families to a special Veterans Day program at Okaw Valley High School  in Bethany Tuesday, November 10.

A biscuit and gravy breakfast will be provided to all who attend, beginning at 8:15 a.m. in the school cafeteria.

An assembly will follow at 9:15 a.m. featuring the Okaw School District band and chorus students. The keynote speaker for this year’s observance is Dennis Bone, Air Force veteran.

Those able to attend should call 665-3232 for a reservation.
