LLC to Host Open House

The Lake Land College Broadcast Communication department will be hosting an open house Friday, March 22 from 12-2 p.m. The event will take place following Laker Visit Day, and a light lunch will be provided at noon.  

Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about Lake Land’s Broadcast Communication program as they tour the college’s student-run FM radio station, WLKL 89.9, The Max Alternative, along with the TV studio and production control room. Attendees will also have the chance to view professional audio equipment, state-of-the-art camera and video equipment and industry-standard digital editing software.

Registration for the event is now open on the Lake Land College visit page at lakelandcollege.edu/visit.

“The open house is the perfect chance for guests to learn about the many career opportunities in this field and take a first look at the equipment and facilities they will get to use,” Greg Powers, speech communication/broadcasting instructor and director of broadcast operations, said. “Anyone interested in a career in broadcasting or related fields will gain a lot from attending this event.”

Students in the Broadcast Communication program can earn an associate degree leading to either immediate employment or transfer to a four-year university. Students can also choose among three certificate programs.

The Broadcast Communication program includes a wide range of opportunities both on-screen and behind the camera. Students can gain experience broadcasting live on WLKL 89.9 The Max Alternative, anchoring a newscast, using equipment in the TV production control room and studio, creating a podcast, commentating on live sports events, using professional audio equipment, operating state-of-the-art camera and video equipment and experimenting with industry-standard digital editing software.

Author to Speak at the Arthur Public Library

Author Lisa Jones Baker will be at the Arthur Public Library on Saturday, April 6th at 1:00 pm. She will talk about her new book “The Quilt Room Secret” set in Arthur. She will also discuss what inspires her and her writing process. “The Quilt Room Secret” will be available for purchase with cash or check and will be autographed at that time. March Quarter Madness

Moultrie County Monthly Quarter Madness will hold their March Quarter Auction on Wednesday, March 13. The event will be held at the Sullivan American Legion. Sullivan ReStore Habitat for Humanity is the charity of the month. Habitat for Humanity ReStore is a resale store to raise money for affordable housing in Moultrie County. All funds raised through the ReStore stay in Moultrie County. Vendors at the event could include:  di-rect sales such as Avon, Hello Pink Jewelry, Scentsy, Plunder Jewelry, pawTree, Thirty-One, Pampered Chef, PLUS farm raised meat bundles, different craft vendors, hair bows, soy candles and melts, and more.  Come shop the vendors and stay for the Quarter Auction. Bring your quarters for charity item and extra bidding.  All-In-Paddle will be $20. Doors open at 6:00 and the Quarter Auction begins at 6:30. All ages are welcome to attend.  Food will be available for purchase through Bubba’s Food Truck in the Legion Parking Lot. Drink purchases can be made through the Legion. Lovington Egg Hunt

The Lovington Park Board will hold the annual Easter egg hunt on March 24 in the park. Hot dogs, chips and refreshments will be served at 12:30 with the hunt beginning at 1:00. A basket raffle will be held, a photographer will be available and Sparrows Unlimited will also have a bike giveaway.

Math and Science Career Event

Lake Land College’s Math and Science Division will host STEM Exploration Day (formerly known as the open house) from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Friday, April 12.  The event allows high school juniors and seniors to learn more about Lake Land’s math and science academic programs as well as career opportunities in STEM fields.

The STEM Exploration Day will begin in Lake Land’s Foundation & Alumni Center, where attendees will be separated into five groups. Current Lake Land students will serve as group leaders to guide the groups through campus and provide a student perspective. Each group will attend five informational sessions to tour Lake Land’s labs, learn from faculty and participate in hands-on demonstrations related to physics, chemistry, biology, math and geographic information systems (GIS).

Attendees will also experience real-world and work-place applications associated with fast-growing occupations in STEM fields.

“We encourage anyone who is interested in a career in math or science to attend this open house,” Division Chair of Math & Science/Geography/Earth Science Instructor Mike Rudibaugh said. “This event is a perfect way for prospective students to get familiar with the faculty, labs and equipment that will prepare them for success in their chosen career.”

The event will conclude with a faculty Q/A panel and small group discussion for students to ask questions. Lunch will also be provided during this segment.

Parents or guardians of high school students, as well as anyone interested in pursuing a math or science degree, are welcome to attend.

2024 Gospel Meeting

The 2024 Gospel Meeting will be held from Sunday, March 17 to Wednesday, March 20 at Highway Church of Christ, 704 West Jackson Street, Sullivan. Times are Sunday at 9:30 am, 10:30 am and 1 pm and Monday-Wednesday at 7 pm. Speaker is Phil Sanders. Jigsaw Puzzle Contest

A jigsaw puzzle contest will be held on Saturday, March 16 from 11 am to 1 pm at the Elizabeth Titus Memorial Library. 

They are looking for six teams of six people or less to compete. The teams will be tasked with putting together the same 750 piece puzzle in a two hour time frame. To preregister call the library at 217-728-7221. There will be a prize for the winners.

The Elizabeth Titus Memorial Library will be hosting a puzzle swap from March 4-16 during regular business hours. Bring a puzzle and trade it for another. They ask that you only bring puzzles that have all their pieces.
