“Flora and Fauna, 1963 to Present of Lake Shelbyville” will be presented by Brock Key, Natural Resources Specialist with the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers at Lake Shelbyville at the March 16th meeting of the Moultrie County Historical and Genealogy Society. The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at the society’s new History Center at 1303 S. Hamilton in Sullivan. Many species and wildlife long absent from Moultrie County have been returning since the creation of Lake Shelbyville, Rare prairie plants are now protected and spreading at Cornflower Hill north of Bruce. The public is invited to attend and share stories of their discoveries of interesting wildlife and flora.

Crappie Tournament

The Angler’s Tribute to Veterans Crappie Tournament will be held on Saturday, April 8 at Lake Shelbyville. Entry fee is $80, $20 big fish. Take-off at Whitley Ramp and weigh-in at Findlay Ramp. Early registration on Friday, April 7 starting at 5 pm at the Sullivan VFW. Must have one veteran in the boat, veterans must show DD214 or VA card. 7 live Crappie-50% payout (payout 1 place for every 5 entries). Schedule will be Livewell/registration 5:30 am, take off at ramp 7 am, lines out of water 2 pm and weigh-in line at 2:30 pm.

Kindergarten Pre-Registration

It’s time to start thinking about preschool and kindergarten for the upcoming school year for your child. To find out what preschool options are available in your community or to pre-register your child for kindergarten, please schedule an appointment to have your child screened. Project H.E.L.P. and the Arthur School District offer free developmental screenings to provide parents the opportunity to discover how their child is developing in the areas of speech, language, concepts and motor skills. Vision and hearing screenings will also be provided, free of charge. Screenings will be held on Friday, March 31 at Lovington United Methodist Church, 241 South Broadway Street, Lovington. Signed parent/guardian permission is required. Screenings are required for possible enrollment in the Project H.E.L.P. preschool classroom. To pre-register your child for kindergarten, bring a certified copy of their birth certificate and emergency contact numbers. A physical with immunization records, dental and vision exams will be accepted. For an appointment call Tiffany Reedy at 217-873-4318.

Personal Assistant Training

Personal Assistant training will be held on Tuesday, March 21 from 1 to 4 pm at the Elizabeth Titus Memorial Library, 2 West Water Street in Sullivan. Personal assistants work for people with disabilities. Training is free and personal assistants have a flexible schedule and can earn $17.25 an hour. You must be 18 to attend this training. Decatur Audubon Society

Members and all interested persons are invited to attend the March 19 general meeting of the Decatur Audubon Society at the Rock Springs Nature Center, 3939 Nearing Lane, Decatur, that will begin at 2:00 pm with a bird study. Following brief announcements, Michael Jeffords and Susan Post, both retired educators from the Illinois Natural History Survey, will present the featured program. Join Michael and Susan as they explore the remote wilderness of Zambia. Included will be such destinations as the Bangwelu Wetlands, Mutinondo Widerness, and South Luwanga National Park. Each is unique with regard to seldom seen wildlife and other biodiversity. Following the presentation, light refreshments will be served.

Southern Gospel Concert

Echoes of Grace, a southern gospel music group from Decatur, will be in concert at Allenville Christian Church on Saturday, March 11 at 6 pm. A free will offering will be collected and refreshments will follow the concert.

Monthly Quarter Madness

Moultrie County Monthly Quarter Madness will hold their March Quarter Auction on Wednesday, March 8. The event will be held at the Sullivan American Legion. Sullivan High School FCCLA is the charity of the month. SHS FCCLA uses funds for various competitions by their members, service projects, networking and offset other club expenses. Vendors at the event could include: direct sales such as Avon, Scentsy, JBloom Jewelry, Thirty-One, Tastefully Simple, Paper Pei (formerly Usbourne Books), Pampered Chef, PLUS different craft vendors, hair bows, boutique clothing, shoes, accessories and more. Come shop the vendors and stay for the Quarter Auction. Bring your quarters for charity item and extra bidding. All-In-Paddle will be $20. Doors open at 6:00 pm and the Quarter Auction begins at 6:30 pm. All ages are welcome to attend. Food will be available for purchase through Highway Heartburn Food Truck in the Legion Parking Lot. Drive Thru Fish Dinner
