OVSD Veterans Day event

Okaw Valley Community Unit School District invites all Veterans and their family members to a Veterans Day program at Okaw Valley High School in Bethany on Tuesday, November 11th. A breakfast will be provided to all who attend, beginning at 8:15 a.m. in the cafeteria, and a short assembly will follow at 9:15 a.m. The assembly will feature the Okaw Valley School District band and chorus students, and a keynote speaker. 

The students and staff at Okaw Valley thank all Veterans for their acts of courage and devotion to the ideals that have served to guide our nation. We would be honored if you could join us to pay tribute to all the brave men and women who have admirably served our country. ‘Holiday Market’ November 1st

On November 1st from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., the First Christian Church of Sullivan will hold a ‘Holiday Market’ at 1357 CR 1200 East in Sullivan. Coffee hour will be from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m., with a lunch café from 11:00 to 1:00 p.m. (carry out available). The market offers a ‘pick a prize’ drawing, barn quilt raffle, jewelry boutique, bountiful bakery, Christmas shoppe, and a crafters and quilters corner. All proceeds to benefit Moultrie County Food Pantry, SES Weekend Food Bag program, Sullivan AMBUBCS, and the Sullivan Area Ministerial Association.

Whether it’s an old family favorite passed down through generations, a recipe you created yourself when being creative, or something new that you love, we are interested in what tickles your palate and brings you joy to put on the table.

The “Family Favorites” cookbook will be published in November.

Halloween in Findlay

On October 31st, there will be two ways to celebrate Halloween in Findlay. A ‘Trunk or Treat’ will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the parking lot south of the Methodist church, hosted by Findlay’s L.A.K.E group. A ‘Halloween Supper’ will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Clarence Bixler Legion Post #409, with costume judging held at 7:00 p.m. Businesses are encouraged to participate.

Fall Festival

Okaw Valley HS Homecoming Parade

The Okaw Valley High School Student Council will be hosting the upcoming Homecoming Parade on October 17th at 1:00 pm. All local and surrounding businesses and social club entries are welcome to participate. No registration is required. Parade lineup is at 12:15 at the high school in Bethany, and the theme is “Hollywood Movie Premiere”.

SAIL health screening testing

SAIL (Soyland Access to Independent Living) is having a ‘Health Screening and Testing Fair’ on Friday, October 10th from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the Shelby County Senior Center located at 325 E. North 9th Street in Shelbyville. This event is open to the public.

The fair will provide various types of testing such as balance testing, eye pressure testing, pulse oximetry, and blood pressure testing, etc. Different screenings are available for depression screening, indicators of substance abuse screening, Narcan screening, and sleep apnea screening. The fair also offers flu shots and Pneumonia shots. The Shelby County Health Department can bill Medicaid, Medicare and private insurance for the shots. Health screening and testing are free unless a cost is listed. For information call Betty Watkins, SAIL Rural Outreach Coordinator, at (217) 774-4322.

Bethany Senior Potluck

The Bethany Senior Citizen Potluck will be held on Wednesday, October 15th, at 11:00 a.m. at the Bethany library, located at 216 W Main Street. Soup and sandwiches will be provided. All are welcome.

Dawkins NEHS submission wows

Mae Dawkins, a Sullivan High School senior and member of the National English Honor Society, was recently informed that she is a national winner of the NEHS Intellectual Freedom Challenge, a prestigious competition that encourages NEHS members to craft compelling arguments defending texts that have faced challenges and bans. Her essay scored among some of the best submissions in the nation by university professors. May was awarded a certificate and a $150 dollar prize.
