Mobile Food Pantry

The University of Illinois, in cooperating partnership with Decatur Catholic Charities and Windsor School District will have a mobile food pantry on Wednesday, December 7 from 4 to 5 pm at Windsor Grade School. A mobile food pantry delivers a 2 week supply of food per family in rural communities. Any individual or family that does not have a steady food supply qualifies to receive food. No financial information is required to qualify. The distribution is open to all, not only residents of Windsor. Deadline to sign up is Thursday, December 1. To sign up call 217-774-9546 Monday through Friday from 8 am to Noon and 1 to 4:30 pm. Once your form is completed by phone, you will be given a number to bring with you on the day of distribution. If you lose your number, you need to bring identification. Food will be distributed according to household size at the Windsor Grade School cafeteria.

Nursing Students Receive Scholarships

Lakeview College of Nursing in Danville and Charleston, awarded numerous scholarships for the Fall 2022 semester. Area students who received awards include the following: Deanna Braden of Sullivan. Braden received the Dr. Robert and Sue Ewbank Scholarship and attends Lakeview’s Charleston Campus. Dakota Clayton of Sullivan. Clayton received the Transfer Need-Based Scholarship and attends Lakeview’s Charleston Campus. Corinne Monte De Oca of Mattoon. Monte De Oca received the Helen Feldkamp Memorial Scholarship and attends Lakeview’s Charleston Campus. Lakeview College of Nursing offers a bachelor of science in nursing degree. It is a single-purpose, private institution that has specialized in nursing education in the Danville area since 1894. Lakeview began offering the program in Charleston, in the fall of 2001.

Bethany Senior Citizens Potluck

The Bethany Senior Citizens Potluck will be held on Wednesday, November 16 at Bethany Firehouse. Bingo is at 10:00 am and lunch will be served at 11:00 am. Bring a covered dish. Turkey, trimmings, coffee and ice tea will be furnished. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Holiday Bazaar

Windsor United Methodist Church will hold a holiday bazaar on Saturday, November 12 from 8 am to 2 pm. Lunch will be served from 11 am to 2 pm, menu includes chili, oyster and veggie soup, ham sandwiches, desserts and drinks. There will be crafts, baked goods and a country store.

MCHGS Annual Dinner

The Moultrie County Historical and Genealogical Society will have their annual dinner on Thursday, November 17 at 6 pm. The meal will be prepared by Griffins Catering and Lynn Lowder will be the speaker for the evening starting at 7 pm. Cost for the meal is $20 per person. Even if you do not wish to attend the dinner, all are welcome for the presentation at 7 pm. Call 217-728-4085 for more information. All reservations must be in by November 10.

Free Veteran’s Day Haircuts

Students in the cosmetology program at Lake Land College will offer free haircuts to all veterans and active duty military personnel on Veteran’s Day.
Appointments for the free haircuts will be available on Friday, November 11 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and can be made by contacting the cosmetology department at 217-234-5300.
Free refreshments including coffee and donuts will be provided for those who attend.
The haircuts will take place in the Cosmetology Clinic in the West Building on campus in Mattoon.

Veterans Day Dinner

The Lovington American Legion will have a Veterans Day Dinner on Friday, November 11 from 4 to 8 pm at the Legion. Menu is spaghetti with garlic bread, salad and dessert. Veterans eat free, others can enjoy the meal for $10.

Waterfowl Hunting Procedures

All hunting in Okaw Wetlands will be in accordance with statewide regulations. There will not be pit blinds or skid blinds available this year. The accessible blind at Okaw Wetland will still be reservable this season and is in the same location as years past. Hunters not hunting in the accessible blind will have to follow the state minimum distance regulation of 200 yards between groups.

Annual Beef Stew Dinner

Hammond United Methodist Church will hold their annual homemade beef stew dinner on Sunday, Nov. 6 from 11:00am to 1:30pm in the church fellowship hall. This fundraiser “all-you-can-eat” dinner will include stew, roll or cornbread, jello salad, dessert and drink. The cost is $8.50 per person with family rates. Take-out will be available. The church is located at 3rd & D Streets and is handicap accessible. The phone number is 262-3386.

OV Veterans Day Event

Okaw Valley Community Unit School District invites all Veterans and their family members to a Veterans Day program at Okaw Valley High School in Bethany on Friday, November 11th. A breakfast will be provided to all who attend beginning at 8:15 am in the cafeteria and a short assembly will follow at 9:15 am. The assembly will feature the Okaw Valley School District band and chorus students, and keynote speaker. The students and staff at Okaw Valley thank all Veterans for their acts of courage and devotion to the ideals that have served to guide our nation. Storm leaves damage in its wake

The storm that occurred in the evening hours of June 11th produced wind gusts of up to 70 mph left many locals without power, with many experiencing damage to property ranging from mild to extreme.
