Workers completed basic construction on a new handicapped accessible fishing pier on Wyman Park Lake. Guard rails would also be added. The pier was constructed on the site where a swimming pier existed many years ago.

It’s no wonder that so many people want to capture the last of the summer magic before it’s gone for another year; Labor Day getaways help people hold on to summer just a little longer. Explore these tips to make Labor Day trips a bit more safe and convenient.
Leave extra time
Roadways are bound to be busy with other Labor Day weekend travelers, particularly for those headed to seaside locales or campgrounds. One way to avoid some of the traffic is to depart from home in the wee hours of the morning or late at night. Leave plenty of time to get to your destination so you won’t be tempted to speed or drive erratically. Utilize GPS and mobile phone mapping apps to identify routes that can help you avoid traffic. Roadways are undeniably busier during certain times of year. The holiday season might be the first period people think of when imagining crowded roadways, but three-day weekends and popular standalone holidays like the Fourth of July and Canada Day also have a tendency to compel people to get behind the wheel so they can celebrate with their loved ones.
The American Automobile Association (AAA) reports that the Friday before Labor Day was the fifth worst travel day in the United States in 2021. AAA determined its worst travel days by examining data about overcrowded airports and flight delays, but also by looking at how much vehicle traffic was on the nation’s highways. Labor Day weekend is often characterized as the unofficial end of summer, so it should come as no great surprise that the travel data company Arrivalist reports that 43 million people traveled on Labor Day weekend in 2021. There was a lot to unpack at Wednesday’s candidate forum which saw Gov. JB Pritzker and his Republican challenger state Sen. Darren Bailey appear on the same stage, albeit at different times, for the first time this campaign season.
For starters, I wrote an article earlier this week fact-checking the governor’s claim that eminent domain language was removed from the final 2021 energy bill known as the Climate and Equitable Jobs Act. That law, which Pritzker signed, contained a provision giving a private transmission line that authority in seven counties.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Lake Shelbyville will hold the 12th Annual Youth Firearm Deer Hunt on October 8 and 9, 2022. To apply for the hunt, youth applicants must be less than 18 years old on October 8, 2022 and be accompanied by an adult. Applications must be received by 8:00 a.m. on September 19, 2022.
