Facts for Families: Parental Stress

Extension Educator Tessa Hobbs-Curley wrote this great article about stress levels of parents when school begins. She wrote it in 2019, but I think it deserves to be published again. She says that children returning to school can be such an exciting, busy time. For some parents, it is relieving to get back into a pattern. For others, it can be an overwhelming and stressful time. Parental stress can be triggered by monetary spending on school supplies and registration, balancing extracurricular activities, and worrying that children will adjust to the learning environment well and get along with others. Things that make newspaper editors groan

Editing, unlike eye surgery, is not an exact science.
We all come at things with our own processes, our own perspectives.
Some of us run the spell-checker first, others tinker with ledes first, but many of us give a story a good copy edit first and only then go back to look for holes, imbalance, telegraphed quotes, issues of context, extraneous words, logical flaws, jargon, bias, lack of fairness, lack of appropriateness, poor pronoun usage, lack of continuity, unparallel construction, lack of specificity, disjointedness, embarrassing turns of a phrase, too many long sentences (such as this one) and more.
I could go on for the remainder of this column listing the things we look for that have a tendency to muck up a perfectly good story.
Once we’re done looking for the bad stuff, we focus on the good stuff in a story. No wonder people think we’re Negative Nancys.

Shopping is foremost on the minds of many people come the holiday season. When considering loved ones and acquaintances while making holiday shopping lists, tangible gifts, such as clothing or items for the home, may be the first things that come to mind. However, experiential gifts also merit consideration. Experiential gifts are those that focus on experiences rather than items. These can include anything from a horseback riding adventure to a spa day to concert tickets to getting behind the wheel of a race car. Experiential gifts can be tailored to people’s interests. A 2014 study by researchers at San Francisco State University showed people tend to realize greater well-being from life experiences and consider them to be a better way to spend their money. Overall satisfaction tends to be greater with gifted experiences than with material things. Furthermore, the Harris Group found that 72 percent of millennials actually want to spend more money on experiences rather than things. GG229230

GriefShare, sponsored by First Christian Church, Sullivan, will be held at the church each Tuesday from 6:00 to 8:00 pm, September 6 through November 22.
Each session includes a time to share thoughts about the previous week’s learning, new material delivered via an approximately 40-minute video, and a discussion of the main ideas in the video.
