Lake Land College math instructor Sarah Harley recently released an open educational resource (OER) math textbook called “Math in General Education.” Harley teaches general education math, and she said she noticed a need in this area and compiled an updated resource for her students.
“We had been using the same textbook for several years and it was time for an update,” Harley said. “Many times when math textbooks are updated, the changes are more cosmetic than beneficial to the content. I knew there were tons of free online resources, so I started to collect the information my students would need into one resource.” Read More

Gov. JB Pritzker Awards Illinois Distinguished Service Medal to National Guard Leader

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker awarded Maj. Gen. Rich Neely, the Adjutant General of Illinois and Commander of the Illinois National Guard, with the Illinois Distinguished Service Medal for the general’s “leadership and poise” during the state’s COVID-19 vaccination efforts.
The Governor, who is the Illinois National Guard’s Commander-in-Chief, awarded the medal to General Neely during the Guard’s quarterly Senior Leader Engagement on Aug. 19 at Manufacturing times Digital (MxD) in Chicago. Read More

Windsor Harvest Picnic 2022

The Windsor Harvest Picnic was held on August 18-20. On Thursday evening there were pork chop dinners for sale by the Windsor Harvest Picnic were served and the Methodist Church had an ice cream social. The Windsor American Legion presented a patriotic opening and musical entertainment included the Family Worship Center Band and Jake Hoult and Mikayla Joy. On Friday evening, there were fish dinners by the Windsor Harvest Picnic with homemade desserts by 5th and 6th graders. Little Miss Harvest Picnic was announced and that honor was given to Brystol Wiltermood. She received a crown and a sash and also rode in the parade on Saturday afternoon. On Saturday, the Windsor FFA served breakfast under the pavilion. The 5K run began shortly after and mid morning children competed to see who could go the farthest distance in the pedal tractor pull. In the afternoon, the parade was held with Shelby County royalty as well as royalty from the Mattoon Bagelfest. This year’s theme was “Back to Our Roots.” That evening there was a chicken dinner by Windsor Harvest Picnic and homemade desserts by W.H.A.T. Musical entertainment that evening was T.G. Sheppard.

Mountain Bike Weekend at Lake Shelbyville

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is partnering with the Friends of Lake Shelbyville, Central Illinois Mountain Bike Association, and the General Dacey Trail Mountain Bike Club, to host the 4th Annual DirtWorx MTB Fest on September 9-11, 2022.
DirtWorx MTB Fest invites mountain bikers to spend the weekend camping at Lone Point Campground as they enjoy the trails Lake Shelbyville has to offer, including the General Dacey Trail and Camp Camfield. Weekend activities include night ride, group rides, pump track, games, food vendors, live music and pocket-sized maps provided for riders to easily navigate self-guided rides and group rides throughout the weekend.

While family members of our military service members do not actively serve, they do have a very important job – holding down the fort. Military service members put their lives on the line to protect and serve our country while their families adapt, miss their loved ones, and support them from home. Eastern Illinois University graduate Kayli Worthey has written this article that includes very valuable tips for military families. Kayli says: in 2018, my brother-in-law was deployed to Germany for 9 months and left behind his wife and son. While the deployment was shorter than some, it still took a toll on my sister and their 2-year-old son, who both missed him dearly. Having one family member on the other side of the world can be extremely stressful, but luckily my sister was able to adapt and relied on family members to help her during those nine months.
