Sullivan Dance Studio’s Competition Team attended their second competition of the year February 24-27 in St. Charles, Missouri. The team had dancers in numbers in many different sessions at the Talent on Parade Dance Competition.

LLC Historic Reduction in Tuition

Lake Land College is taking a historic step in support of its students and the community by reducing tuition for next year and making college more affordable than ever during a time of rapidly expanding inflation.
The Lake Land College Board of Trustees is expected to set in-district tuition at $100 per credit hour, down from $110.50, during the regular meeting on Monday, March 14 at 6 p.m. The new tuition rate, which represents a near 10% reduction, will go into effect for the Summer 2022, Fall 2022 and Spring 2023 terms. ‘Headline-Speak’: What it is and Why we use it

I’ve been drowning in emails about headlines lately so, today, I’ll try to shed some light on them.
The emails haven’t been about political slants, sensationalism or misspellings in headlines but rather how to interpret them.
As I’ve noted on a number of occasions, headlines are an art form. They’re not easy to do well, especially in one- or two-column spaces.

Tense
“Newspaper headlines state that a person dies, when the person died. It’s not an ongoing action, but finished, complete, done,” wrote reader Deborah Gaither. “Take the headline: ‘Colin Powell, exemplary general stained by Iraq claims, dies.’”
I’ve known since the days I unabashedly wore inch-wide leather ties to work that headlines are written in a form of present tense, but I don’t recall ever being asked why — or bothering to investigate. Read More

Sullivan students placed fourth in the Showstoppers National Show Choir Competition at Disney World in Florida, competing against schools up to ten times the size of SHS.
Don Lockwood, an agricultural and science teacher at Sullivan High School, was the 1997 Teacher of Excellence awarded by the Sullivan Community Education Foundation. His award included a plaque, certificate with excerpts from the nominators and a $1,000 grant to be used to purchase equipment or supplies for his classroom. Ten mini grants were awarded. Fourth grade teachers Dave VanDeursen, Rikki Ray, Laura Elder and Martha Sherer shared a $700 grant. Sherer also shared in a second mini grant with Title I teacher Mary Kay Gatchel in the amount of $350. Three middle school teachers also receive mini grants. Paul Stone chairman of the foundation was recognized for his service. He retired from the board that year. Read More

Lake Shelbyville Fish Habitat Improvement Day

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Illinois Department of Natural Resources and Lake Shelbyville Fish Habitat Alliance will place donated Christmas trees and artificial structures into Lake Shelbyville to enhance the fisheries on March 26, 2022. Volunteers with large jon boats are needed as well as volunteers on shore to help bundle and place trees in boats. To volunteer, meet at the Wilborn Creek Recreation Area boat ramp parking lot by 8:30 a.m. Volunteers are required to sign in prior to starting work at 9:00 a.m. A free lunch will be provided.
