Sullivan High School English teacher Cami Badman recently received the John L. Manear Outstanding Advisor from the National English Honor Society for her efforts guiding Sullivan High School’s NEHS chapter.
According to the NEHS website, the award is “presented annually to one advisor who has given generously of time, talent, creativity, and leadership to a local NEHS chapter. The award recognizes advisors who foster the spirit of academic excellence and community service in their work with chapter members.”
Badman was nominated by retired SHS English teacher Becky Lawson, who charted the chapter in 2013 through a grant with Dr. Teresita Hunt of Eastern Illinois University. Read More

A Fantastical Look at ‘Less’ and ‘Fewer’

Despite there being dragons, prodigious bloodshed and eight long seasons, I’ve largely enjoyed finally watching “Game of Thrones.”
There was an awful lot (of awfulness) that happened during this series, but it had its subtleties, too.
I especially enjoyed the running grammar-correcting subtext.
Stannis Baratheon in the second season corrects Ser Davos Seaworth, who was an illiterate smuggler, telling him it was “fewer” fingers, not less.
In the seventh season, in an episode I watched two weeks ago, Jon Snow asks Davos, “How many men do we have in the North to fight him — 10,000? Less?”
Davos’ response: “Fewer.” Read More

Lake Land College to host virtual Court Reporting Technology information session
Lake Land College will be hosting a virtual information session for its new Court Reporting Technology Degree special admission program September 1 at 6 p.m. Attendees will learn about the career opportunities available to court reporters.
The introduction of the program follows the increased high demand for court reporting and closed-captioning professionals throughout the nation.
“Court reporting creates several opportunities for rewarding career paths for students who are interested in developing this skill set,” Lisa Earp, business instructor/director of court reporting/office professionals program coordinator, said.

Evacuate, Everyone! But Don’t All Flush At Once

The headline read “Seventy employees evacuated, three hospitalized after ammonia leak at Wheeling pizza factory.”
All of you anal-retentive types probably shuddered at the thought.
One of them was staff writer Russell Lissau.
“When people evacuate, they’re emptying their bowels,” he wrote to me. “When buildings evacuate, it means all the people have left. I learned that one on ‘The Wire,’ Season 5.”
For the unindoctrinated, “The Wire” was a gritty HBO cop show set in Baltimore. It spent some of its final season in a fictionalized Baltimore Sun newsroom. (The show’s creator some years earlier had been a reporter in the real version.)
I have yet to watch a full episode of “The Wire,” even though several friends with a knowledge of my cinematic and small-screen leanings have recommended it. Read More

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will hold a silent auction for impounded deer stands and climbing sticks on Saturday, August 21st from 8:30 –11:00 a.m. at the government vehicle compound south of the Lake Shelbyville Administration Building. Utilities More Affordable for Illinois’ Households with Low Incomes

On Thursday, July 29, Governor Pritzker signed SB265 into law expanding the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) and increasing access to the Percentage of Income Payment Plan (PIPP). The PIPP is a companion program to LIHEAP which addresses utility affordability by allowing qualified participants to pay no more than 6% of their monthly income for electric and gas utility services as well as receive forgiveness of 1/12 of their total utility debt for each on time monthly payment. I absolutely love blueberries and also when I get to pick them myself! So I wanted to share this article and recipe by Extension Educators Caitlin Mellendorf and Jenna Smith. They say: I got to spend some time a few weeks ago picking blueberries! Put on my hat and UV shirt, brought a bottle of water, and got to pickin’. Thank goodness for taller blueberry bushes so I could take a break from crouching down. Now the question is: what to do with all the fresh blueberries?
Nutritionally, a 1/2-cup of blueberries contains around 40 calories, 10g carbohydrates, 2g fiber, and is a good source of vitamin C, folate, and vitamin K. Blueberries do not have significant amounts of fat, sodium, or protein. Read More
