The C.E.F.S. Economic Opportunity Corporation, as administrator of the Home Energy Assistance Program in Christian, Clay, Effingham, Fayette, Montgomery, Moultrie, and Shelby counties, is pleased to announce that funds are available to assist income-eligible households with their natural gas, propane and electric bills and furnace assistance.
The program will begin September 1, 2021, for all income-eligible households. Applications will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis through May 31, 2022. There will be no priority groups this program year. Households in need are encouraged to apply. Read More

12th Annual Harvest Run 5K
The 12th Annual Harvest Run 5K was held early on Saturday in Windsor. There were 42 participants. The first finisher was Derek Decker, he was also the top male finisher. Amanda Gordon was the top female finisher. Pictured are some of the medal winners from the run. The run was sponsored by the Class of 2022.

Macon County Man Sentenced to 6 Years in Prison

Braxton E. Wilder, 25, Decatur has been sentenced to six years of imprisonment in the Illinois Department of Corrections. At a hearing on August 20, 2021, Judge Jeremy Richey accepted a plea in which Wilder pled guilty to the offense of: Robbery, a Class 2 Felony, Moultrie County case 20-CF-48. Read More

The only reasons that the Moultrie County Historical and Genealogical (MCHGS) is asking for assistance from the City of Sullivan is to help METRO stay in Sullivan and add 40-60 new jobs. We can’t make that happen by ourselves.
METRO has outgrown their current building and needs additional office space in Sullivan if it is to maintain its home office in Sullivan. METRO asked the MCHGS if we would be willing to sell them our current buildings at 117 E. Harrison and S. Madison St. We told them we would be willing to do so if we could find a replacement building suitable to meet our needs. We would not be considering a move or requesting financial assistance from the City if METRO did not need our building site on which to erect a new two story office building, which could be connected to their current offices, and provide space for 40-80 new employees. 25 Years Ago This Week
Sullivan’s Brock McDaniel participated in the Ohio Valley Regional baseball tournament held in Mattoon. McDaniel played for the Mattoon Bambino All-Star Team and hit 500 for the tourney. Mattoon, however lost the championship game 9-0 to Fern Creek, Ky. The games were held at Lawson Park in Mattoon. Despite the loss, Mattoon assured itself a spot in the top 16 teams in the country. Brock is the son of Mike and Ginny McDaniel of Sullivan. Read More
Moultrie County Retired Teachers Association Met Recently

The Moultrie County Retired Teachers Association met August 4, 2021, at the First Christian Church in Sullivan. President Jane McKown opened the meeting by welcoming members both in-person and via Zoom, as well as guests. She shared a bit of poetry and a verse from the Bible. She then led those present in the Pledge of Allegiance.
Karen Edwards introduced the teachers present from the Okaw Valley schools who received the grants for 2021. Two of them were present and explained how they intend to use the grants in their classrooms that our association awarded them. Two of them could not be present. Read More

It is the season of fairs and fair food! I wanted to share this article from Extension Educator Jenna Smith about how to still enjoy your favorites within reason. Jenna says: many of the fairs and festivals we missed last year are back and ready to entertain. Deep fried candy bars, onion blossoms, and fried cheese curds are a “must-have” for some, but nutritional nightmares for cardiologists. The question is can we enjoy our favorite fair foods while still maintaining a healthy lifestyle?
Absolutely! You don’t have to completely abstain from getting the food you’ve been thinking about all year. Pick a couple of your “must-haves” and one or two of your favorite friends to share it with; most portions are far greater than an actual serving size. Also, don’t let yourself come to the fair starving. Since you likely won’t get many fruits and vegetables at the fair, be sure to eat plenty before or after your trip. This will give your body important nutrients that it may have otherwise missed. Read More

NAMI Champaign is offering their free 8-session family class in Sullivan. Facilitated by local community area members, the classes will start Tuesday, September 7, 2021.
NAMI’s signature Family-to-Family education program is for family members, caregivers, and significant others of people with mental health conditions such as Bipolar disorder, Schizophrenia, or Depression. This program includes a crisis plan, information on various serious mental illnesses, discussions on communication with a loved one, and finding and using local support and services. Read More
