Millikin Performance Season

Students and faculty in the Millikin University College of Fine Arts are adjusting to a new world of virtual instruction, social distancing and practicing their art in unexpected ways. The new modes of learning on Millikin’s campus have led to a reimagined fall 2020 performance season for the College of Fine Arts featuring a combination of in-person and virtual performances in accordance with University’s health and safety regulations.
Millikin University’s College of Fine Arts is pleased to announce the following events for its fall 2020 performance season.
School of Theatre & Dance
“This year, the School of Theatre & Dance main stage season looks different than ever before. We are exploring all options for continuing to create theatre and dance performances, while keeping our casts, crews and audiences safe and socially distanced,” said Mary Black, director of the School of Theatre & Dance. “Our first production, ‘Some Enchanted Evening,’ was originally scheduled to be performed at various locations throughout Decatur (Ill.) last spring. This production will now be performed outdoors, on the patio of the new Center for Theatre & Dance, for a limited socially-distanced audience seated in lawn chairs and on blankets on the quad.” Read More

Sullivan firefighters were called to the Moultrie Grain Association’s Chipps Elevator in Sullivan. Some chaff had ignited in a drier.
Marijuana traffickers led police on a wild chase ultimately eluding capture in a manhunt but leaving behind their four-wheel drive vehicle and more than $100,000 in pot.
The News Progress won eight awards at the annual Illinois Press Assn. ceremonies in Lisle, including a special lifetime legislative award in memory of Bob Best, the late publisher of the News Progress. Photographer R.R. Best and Sport Editor Ed Nelson both won first place awards in the large weekly newspaper category. Marion Best accepted the special legislative award on behalf of her late husband.
The Lovington High School volleyball team finished second in the Bomber Classic over the weekend, losing the championship to Edinburg 15-8,15-13. Read More

The Moultrie County COVID-19 update for Sept 14 states that there are 10 additional cases of COVID-19 with age range of teens to 80 years old. Total residents tested positive to date is 199. Total COVID-19 related deaths to date is 3. Total tests administered to date is 4,243.
Family Hosts Red Cross Blood Drive

The community is invited to give blood in honor of River Helmuth at a special American Red Cross blood drive held in her name Saturday, Sept. 19,8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Sullivan American Legion, 8 East Strain St., in Sullivan.
River is a four-and-a-half-year-old girl who was born with down syndrome and a congenital heart defect called balanced complete av canal defect, also known as CAVC. CAVC is a large hole in center of the heart affecting all four chambers. A CAVC allows blood to mix and causes the chambers and valves of the heart not to route blood properly. River has undergone two heart surgeries resulting in the need for donated blood which helped made her heart surgeries possible. Read More

Evan Barker of Sullivan assigned to Task Force Illini, 33rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, Illinois Army National Guard Soldier, was promoted to Corporal during a promotion ceremony at Combat Training Center-Yavoriv, Ukraine, Aug. 28.
Barker is a 92F petroleum supply specialist at Joint Multinational Training Group-Ukraine. Task Force Illini, which deployed to Ukraine in July, is the command element of Joint Multinational Training Group-Ukraine, which is responsible for training, advising, and mentoring the Ukrainian cadre at CTC-Y to improve Armed Forces Ukraine’s training capacity and defense capabilities.
