Coping With the Aging Process or Where Did I Put My Coffee Cup?

News Progress Posted on December 12, 2018 by webmasterDecember 12, 2018

By Jerry L. Ginther
NP Guest Columnist

If I’d known I was going to live this long, I would have taken better care of myself. I thought getting old would take a lot longer. I’ve heard those amusing comments several times recently; from those my age as well as those who are older.
Not that introspection is a new thing with me, but the years seem to now be flashing by at warp speed. In recent years it seems I’m putting up and taking down the Christmas tree more frequently. As a matter of fact it seems that I go through this ritual every couple of months. And, the frequency of my own birthday is coming around more often than in the past. Now, I’m thankful, of course, that this keeps occurring, but as those annual celebration numbers increase, I am also reminded that it’s obvious that I have more of them behind me than I have to look forward to. This makes planning for future events a bit more restrictive. Not only do I have to consider the time element, but also, now I have to consider whether I’ll be physically and mentally capable to even consider some things I might want do in the years to come. Superintendent-Y Stuff: A Walk with Mr. Walk

News Progress Posted on December 12, 2018 by webmasterDecember 12, 2018

By Ted Walk,
Supt. Sullivan CUSD #300

The majority of schools in Illinois offer Spanish as a foreign language course option.
For Sullivan schools, we are fortunate to have a Spanish program in which our students truly learn to speak and converse in Spanish.
Early in my teaching career I had the opportunity to travel to Costa Rica on a mission trip which a number of Sullivan students and recent Sullivan graduates also attended.
Having had Spanish in high school, I would interact with students at the orphanage we visited by going through some Spanish words for colors, numbers, and possibly body parts with varying degrees of accuracy.
Then I witnessed what our Sullivan students were doing. They were able to converse fluently. It was not snippets of vocabulary. It was not halting, broken Spanish. Read More

Superintendent-Y Stuff: A Walk with Mr. Walk

The Sullivan Middle School Building is over 100 years old. Its ability to serve students to this day is a testament to the care and maintenance it has been given over the years.
One area of the building that was showing many signs of wear and tear was the space located above the gym. Some may remember it as the study hall room while others remember it as the library.
Through the generosity of a grant through the Sullivan Community Education Foundation, this space was able to undergo a major remodel. Not only was the space freshened up with new paint, new blinds, and new rugs, but versatile student seating was installed along with white boards to enhance student collaboration.  Read More

SES Gold Slips

SES Gold Slips
Gold Slip winners at Sullivan Elementary School for the month of November (from left to right): Kolton Kirby saw a pre-K student struggling to turn the water on at the restroom. Rather than doing it for him, Kolton taught him how to do it himself for the next time, then praised the student.
Porter Addison noticed a friend was sad. He asked if he could sit by that friend to cheer him up.
Luke Schultz saw a classmate crying because she dropped her lunch on the floor. He helped her pick it up to make her feel better.
Madyx Schwass is very helpful to others at the end of the school day. We all work to clean up our room to make vacuuming easier for Mr. Lappin, but Madyx does more than his fair share! He stacks most of the chairs in the room, picks up paper and trash, and helps classmates get organized. In addition, Madyx brings in the lunch cart from the hall and puts all of the chairs on the table in the hall so Mr. Lappin’s job is easier.
Cali Szabo is always so pleasant and polite. She was an easy choice to be a buddy and helper for our new student!. Cali has helped unpack supplies, set up a binder, label a journal, create a card of logins and passwords, explain classroom, lunchroom, and school procedures, and more. She has befriended our new classmate and made her feel welcome. They have had lunch and played together.
Torreon Phillips stands quietly in the lunch line every single day while students around him are talking when they are not supposed to.

Poppies to honor those who gave all

News Progress

On Friday, May 22nd, Ruth Keown, Vice-President of the Sullivan American Legion Auxiliary Unit 68, greeted the public at the entrance to the local Post Office, distributing Memorial Poppies. Each year, millions of Americans wear these Memorial Poppies in memory of American service members who lost their lives in war while serving their country, and to assist those Veterans who are now hospitalized or in rehabilitation, suffering from wounds and illnesses. Memorial Day poppies distributed by the American Legion symbolize the ultimate sacrifice made by service members and are a tribute to those who lost their lives in war. Wearing the poppy is a way to honor the fallen and ensure their bravery is never forgotten.
