25 Years Ago This Week

Sullivan American Legion Post 68 helped secure medals for two veterans commemorating the 75th Anniversary of World War I. Marion W. “ Snapper” Yates, 94, formerly of Sullivan, and John H. Moffet, 98, of Windsor are the only known living WWI veterans living in the area.
The American Legion also held a flag-burning ceremony. A photo of Stanley Guin accepting a tattered flag from Steven Keown for burning is shown. Steven’s father Mike, and brother Phillip were present as well.
Jed Shasteen of Sullivan earned the distinguished honor of being named an Eagle Scout during a ceremony at the First Christian Church. Shasteen, the son of Mike and Ruth Shasteen, joins his father as one of the elite recipients of the highest rank in scouting. Mike Shasteen, who now serves as Jed’s scoutmaster, became an Eagle Scout in 1961. Read More

Thinking About Health: Government Tries Yet Again to Regulate Tobacco Products

News Progress Posted on December 5, 2018 by webmasterDecember 5, 2018

•December 5, 2018•

By Trudy Lieberman,
Rural Health News Service

The Food and Drug Administration just announced it would once again try to regulate tobacco products.
This time the target of the agency’s regulatory hand is the growing menace of flavored e-cigarettes and other tobacco products used by young people who’ve turned to vaping and smoking. The FDA said about 3.6 million teens under age 18 admit they use e-cigarettes.
That’s an alarming number, and it is worrisome because FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb has noted that almost all smokers started when they were kids. At their core, the FDA’s proposals are aimed at keeping minors from smoking today so they don’t become smokers tomorrow.
The FDA has taken two actions to curtail young customers’ appetites for the market’s new tobacco products. It did not issue an outright ban on e-cigarettes that had been widely expected and hoped for by some anti-tobacco advocates. Instead, the agency said stores could continue to sell e-cigarettes, but only from closed-off areas that would not be accessible to minors. Whether this will keep teens from getting their hands on e-cigarettes is anyone’s guess. Read More

Staying Secure While Shopping Online Making #Cybermonday #Cybersecure

News Progress Posted on November 28, 2018 by webmasterNovember 28, 2018

•November 28, 2018•

Editor’s Note: County Clerk and Recorder Georgia England had to deal with a major cyber attack when the Moultrie County courthouse computer systems were hacked, forcing a complete rebuild of systems for offices. She prepared the following tips for family and friends shopping online for the holidays.
It is that time of year where so many people prepare to purchase gifts for friends, family, and loved ones. Though it can be convenient to avoid the lines and rush for that latest Black Friday deal by shopping online, this also carries some risk. Cybercriminals are always working to steal your personal and payment information. The holiday shopping season is the perfect opportunity for this to happen. By following a few key practices, you can greatly lower your chances of becoming a victim of identity theft or fraud.
Choose Trusted Online Retailers and Apps
Always shop only with trusted online retailers. That means using a retailer you already know or one that is verified through another trusted entity. If you find a new possible shop to do business with but are unsure about its reputation, try to find reviews from trusted sources such as the Better Business Bureau. It is important to stick to trusted review sources because there are several ways to fake online reviews, and there are places where cybercriminals can pay other criminals to post positive reviews. Even though an untrusted site might have the best prices, it is worth it to use a trusted online shop that is known to safeguard your information and purchases. Read More

A Most Important Holiday Conversation

News Progress Posted on November 28, 2018 by webmasterNovember 28, 2018

•November 28, 2018•

As we gather with family and friends during the holidays, health care providers want you to think about discussing more than just what flavor of pie to serve or who is bringing what to the gathering.
It’s a perfect time to discuss what your wishes are when it comes to medical care or other directives, especially as we age.
Surveys have shown that about 80% of adults believe it’s important to have these conversations, and yet only about 30% of us have actually done so and documented them. Read More

Remember When? 11-28-2018

News Progress Posted on November 28, 2018 by webmasterNovember 28, 2018

25 Years Ago This Week

The Sullivan Redskins were in the 3A Sweet Sixteen after defeating Newton 15-8 in a second half surge. After the first half, the Eagles were up 8-0. Senior Jason Brewer said the team came out with more intensity and a stronger desire to win after a motivational talk from Coach Jerry Lane. Bubba Farris describes how he, at 160 pounds, held off Newton’s 250-pound nose guard by staying low and taking him down at the waist. Leif Walling stepped up carrying the ball 32 times for 139 yards in the contest. Jason Moody and Jed Shasteen had 13 tackles each to hold the Eagles to their lowest point total of the season. John Cruit and Brian Elder each added eight tackles, Adam Elder had seven and Charley LeCrone had six. The 1993 team fell to Robinson in the second round. Their squad was the first team to make it to the second round since 1985. Read More

Poppies to honor those who gave all

News Progress

On Friday, May 22nd, Ruth Keown, Vice-President of the Sullivan American Legion Auxiliary Unit 68, greeted the public at the entrance to the local Post Office, distributing Memorial Poppies. Each year, millions of Americans wear these Memorial Poppies in memory of American service members who lost their lives in war while serving their country, and to assist those Veterans who are now hospitalized or in rehabilitation, suffering from wounds and illnesses. Memorial Day poppies distributed by the American Legion symbolize the ultimate sacrifice made by service members and are a tribute to those who lost their lives in war. Wearing the poppy is a way to honor the fallen and ensure their bravery is never forgotten.
