By Ted Walk,
Supt. Sullivan CUSD #300

At Sullivan Middle School, we currently have 26 seventh and eighth grade students serving as Classroom Mentors.
Students interested in participating in the Classroom Mentor program complete an application and go through a selection process. For those who are selected, students spend about 40 minutes daily in an elementary school classroom.
These students provide assistance to both teachers and students. Middle school students can be found performing all sorts of tasks.
I have observed these Classroom Mentors reading to elementary students just outside of their respective classrooms or listening to elementary students read, while helping them with difficult words. I have witnessed these students reviewing math facts on an individual basis or seated among a group of elementary students engaging them in a lesson. Read More

Letter to the Editor: 9-19-2018

News Progress Posted on September 19, 2018 by webmasterSeptember 19, 2018

To the Editor:

It had to have been somebody in an urban area, probably Chicago, who proposed the Illinois vehicle mileage tax.
Probably everybody has heard about the VMT by now, but if enacted there would be a device in your car to measure how many miles you drive, and you would be taxed 1.5 cents per mile. For those who consider it too invasive to have one of these devices in your car, you would be charged a flat $450 (yes, four hundred fifty dollars) per year. Read More

It is a visual statement of solidarity by the Christian community that abortion kills children and that the church supports the sanctity of human life from the moment of conception until natural death.

Poppies to honor those who gave all

News Progress

On Friday, May 22nd, Ruth Keown, Vice-President of the Sullivan American Legion Auxiliary Unit 68, greeted the public at the entrance to the local Post Office, distributing Memorial Poppies. Each year, millions of Americans wear these Memorial Poppies in memory of American service members who lost their lives in war while serving their country, and to assist those Veterans who are now hospitalized or in rehabilitation, suffering from wounds and illnesses. Memorial Day poppies distributed by the American Legion symbolize the ultimate sacrifice made by service members and are a tribute to those who lost their lives in war. Wearing the poppy is a way to honor the fallen and ensure their bravery is never forgotten.
