Letter to the Editor: 9-26-2018

News Progress Posted on September 26, 2018 by webmasterSeptember 26, 2018

Dear Citizens of Moultrie County and, especially, the City of Sullivan,

On October 25, 2017, the rental home of Matt Nohren, his wife, Nikki, and their two children was destroyed by fire. Nikki, Hayden and Whitney were home when the fire started. Fortunately, Hayden alerted his mom and sister. All three escaped unharmed. All the family had after the fire was the clothing on their backs. They were homeless.
The members of First Apostolic Church, Sullivan, and Pastor Francis Farney opened their vacant parsonage for the Nohren family. The church paid all utilities and charged no rent until the end of June. This provided Mr. and Mrs. Nohren time, who are both employed, to get back on their feet financially. Read More

At their homecoming banquet September 29, the Lovington Alumni Association will honor the five local businesses who display LHS trophies.
Even before the Lovington High School building was torn down, community businesses were planning ways to exhibit the trophies and other memorabilia formerly housed in the LHS halls and foyers.
Ray Duncan, chairman of the board of Hardware State Bank, first suggested the idea of housing the trophies at the bank, library, phone company and elevator.
“I had seen my former high school and other schools that had been merged store their trophies in closets or lose them,” Duncan said.
Duncan thought the bank was the perfect place to house the basketball and volleyball trophies. He had coached Lovington’s boys’ basketball teams three different times, leading the high school to three regional championships and three conference championships. He also coached the junior high boys’ team for two years prior to the annexation of the school district. Read More

Poppies to honor those who gave all

News Progress

On Friday, May 22nd, Ruth Keown, Vice-President of the Sullivan American Legion Auxiliary Unit 68, greeted the public at the entrance to the local Post Office, distributing Memorial Poppies. Each year, millions of Americans wear these Memorial Poppies in memory of American service members who lost their lives in war while serving their country, and to assist those Veterans who are now hospitalized or in rehabilitation, suffering from wounds and illnesses. Memorial Day poppies distributed by the American Legion symbolize the ultimate sacrifice made by service members and are a tribute to those who lost their lives in war. Wearing the poppy is a way to honor the fallen and ensure their bravery is never forgotten.
