Antibiotics – You Don’t Always Need Them

News Progress Posted on November 15, 2017 by webmasterNovember 15, 2017

•November 15, 2017•

The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) is recognizing U.S. Antibiotic Awareness to help decrease the misuse of antibiotics and protect people from the dangers of antibiotic resistant bacteria. Antibiotics do not cure viral infections such as colds, flu, most sore throats, most coughs and bronchitis, many sinus infections, and many ear infections.

“Antibiotics are crucial in treating many diseases. However, when antibiotics are used incorrectly or unnecessarily, which happens more than 50 percent of the time according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), bacteria become resistant to antibiotics,” said IDPH Director Nirav D. Shah, M.D., J.D. “As bacteria become more resistant to antibiotics, those bacterial illnesses will be more difficult to treat or untreatable.” Read More

Remember When? 11-15-2017

News Progress Posted on November 15, 2017 by webmasterNovember 15, 2017

25 Years Ago This Week

The Sullivan school district will levy $66,000 less than the previous year in the coming tax year under a tentative tax levy approved by the board. Two reasons for the reduction include lower amounts needed for bonds and interest and the equalized assessed valuation increased by $4 million in Moultrie County. The education fund levy increased by $44,000 and building space lease $2,000.

Patti Ketchmark, chair of the Sullivan Hometown Holiday Splendor committee, announced the city has purchased 21 eight foot Starflake lights to mark the Sullivan Starflake Trail. This is part of Sullivan’s commitment to join the Festival of Lights at the Inn at Eagle Creek. Findlay and Shelbyville Starflake Trails open Nov. 9 and 16 respectively with Sullivan joining on Nov. 19. A holiday lighting contest with a grand prize of $1000 is being held in Moultrie and Shelby counties for residents who live along the rural route of the Lake Shelbyville Festival of Lights’ Starflake Trail.

Bob Best writes in B.B.’s that the Festival in Eagle Creek State Park is now being billed as a national attraction. I feel this is a little strong, but when you are generating hype for something, make the claim and then have someone prove you wrong. Read More

IDNR Reminds Deer Hunters to Make Safety a Priority during Firearm Season

News Progress Posted on November 15, 2017 by webmasterNovember 15, 2017

•November 15, 2017•

The Illinois Firearm Deer Season opens with the first weekend of firearm hunting on Nov. 17-19, and hunters in Illinois are reminded to make safety their top priority throughout all of Illinois’ busiest hunting seasons.

“This is prime time for hunting in Illinois, and the best way to enjoy an autumn or winter day in the field, in a blind, or in a tree stand is to make sure you’re hunting safely,” said Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) Director Wayne Rosenthal.

The IDNR Office of Law Enforcement, which administers the Illinois Hunter Safety Education Program, reports there were 29 hunting incidents last year during all seasons, and 23 of those incidents involved hunters falling from elevated tree stands, or falling while climbing into or out of tree stands. Poppies to honor those who gave all

News Progress

On Friday, May 22nd, Ruth Keown, Vice-President of the Sullivan American Legion Auxiliary Unit 68, greeted the public at the entrance to the local Post Office, distributing Memorial Poppies. Each year, millions of Americans wear these Memorial Poppies in memory of American service members who lost their lives in war while serving their country, and to assist those Veterans who are now hospitalized or in rehabilitation, suffering from wounds and illnesses. Memorial Day poppies distributed by the American Legion symbolize the ultimate sacrifice made by service members and are a tribute to those who lost their lives in war. Wearing the poppy is a way to honor the fallen and ensure their bravery is never forgotten.
