Decatur Memorial Hospital Breast Center Receives Prestegious National Accreditation

The Decatur Memorial Hospital (DMH) Breast Center has been granted a three-year/full accreditation designation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a program administered by the American College of Surgeons. Accreditation by the NAPBC is only given to those centers that have voluntarily committed to provide the highest level of quality breast care and that undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of their performance. During the survey process, the center must demonstrate compliance with standards established by the NAPBC for treating women who are diagnosed with the full spectrum of breast disease. The standards include proficiency in the areas of: center leadership, clinical management, research, community outreach, professional education, and quality improvement. A breast center that achieves NAPBC accreditation has demonstrated a firm commitment to offer its patients every significant advantage in their battle against breast disease. Read More

October was the 10th Wettest in Illinois

The statewide average precipitation in Illinois for October was 4.94 inches, 1.70 inches above normal, and the 10th wettest October since 1895, according to Illinois State Climatologist Jim Angel of the Illinois State Water Survey.

The largest monthly total in the state was 15.90 inches of precipitation in Glen Ellyn. Seven other sites in northeast Illinois reported more than one foot of precipitation in October. Read More

Invest in Kids Act Applications are Through My Tax Illinois

The Illinois Department of Revenue (IDOR) is announcing that general information regarding the Invest in Kids Act (IIK) (Public Act 100-0465), the recently enacted Illinois tax-credit scholarship program, is now available through its website tax.illinois.gov.

Beginning January 2, 2018, MyTax Illinois will begin accepting applications from individuals and businesses who wish to participate in IIK. To apply, individuals and businesses must report their intention to make an authorized contribution to an approved Scholarship Granting Organization (SGO). The SGOs, in turn, provide scholarships for eligible Illinois students to attend qualified non-public schools in Illinois. Taxpayers can receive a tax credit equal to 75% of their approved SGO contribution. Those interested in applying are strongly encouraged to register for a MyTax Illinois account as soon as possible to avoid any processing delays when the application system goes live on January 2nd.  Read More

SCED Sponsors Christmas Tree Village

Sullivan Economic Development is giving Christmas tree decorators a chance to display their work on the square in Sullivan Friday, December 8 from 4-7 p.m.

The trees received by then will be displayed outside of Santa’s house to help observe the spirit of an old-fashioned Christmas.

At the end of the event, the trees will be donated to families in need in partnership with Operation Secret Santa. Read More

Mary Kay Scott, a former resident of Bethany, was honored at the 8th Annual JVR Awards for Trial Lawyer Excellence hosted by the Jury Verdict Reporter, a division of Law Bulletin Media.

The event took place October 26 in the Peninsula Hotel Chicago. More than 300 trial attorneys and judges were in attendance for the reception and awards ceremony.

The program recognized superior outcomes in jury trials from both the plaintiff and defense bar.   Read More

25 Years Ago This Week

Coroner Lynn Reed was the only Republican survivor in the Democrat tidal wave which swept Moultrie County in Tuesday’s general election.

A whopping 83.70 percent of the county’s 7,958 registered voters went to the polls, exceeding County Clerk Richard Perdeu’s expectation of 76 percent. Straight Democrat tickets were cast by 775 voters, and 352 ballots went for Republicans.

For the first time since the one man, one vote rule went into effect all nine Moultrie County board will be Democrats.

Joe B. Bone of Bethany led the ticket, incumbent Lynn E. Maxedon was second, followed by newcomers Steven W. Mayberry and Sally K. Foley. The remaining five were incumbents Kerry L. Pate, Orris R. Drew, R. Blaine Erhardt, Timothy D. Singer and Gary (Mick) Braden.

Gale Coil was elected state’s attorney by 155 votes. Reed was elected to his fourth term as coroner  with 69.57 percent of the vote. Read More

The Windsor FFA Chapter took 14 students to the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis IN on October 26-28.

The attending chapter members got to witness several events and speakers. One of the events they attended was the award ceremony for the American FFA Degree.

Poppies to honor those who gave all

On Friday, May 22nd, Ruth Keown, Vice-President of the Sullivan American Legion Auxiliary Unit 68, greeted the public at the entrance to the local Post Office, distributing Memorial Poppies. Each year, millions of Americans wear these Memorial Poppies in memory of American service members who lost their lives in war while serving their country, and to assist those Veterans who are now hospitalized or in rehabilitation, suffering from wounds and illnesses. Memorial Day poppies distributed by the American Legion symbolize the ultimate sacrifice made by service members and are a tribute to those who lost their lives in war. Wearing the poppy is a way to honor the fallen and ensure their bravery is never forgotten.
