What Can Tabor Park Do to Attract Children?

Dear Editor,

I am so happy to see that Mr. Burger stood up for Tabor Park. When Dean and I first moved out to Cottontail Lane we were happy to see the park as it first appeared after it had been left to the city of Sullivan.

We saw teachers taking their students to see the different wildlife that the park had and the different types of foliage that had attracted and sustained them. We saw several types of ground nesting birds including pheasants, killdeer and grass sparrows. We had a fox that had a family in Tabor.  Read More

More Information Needed on Dog Food Program Decision

Dear Editor,

I read your article and a few things were missing, which might help make it clear why the decisions were made to discontinue the free dog food program from Mars Pet care.

Mars Pet care, formerly Kal-Kan, offers free dog food to area animal control facilities to help the counties and cities in the area in caring for and feeding the animals. Sam Donaker and I have been managing animal control for about 12 years now. In that period of time Kal-Kan was changed to the present Mars Pet care and consequently the program changed. We were required to send information annually about our population and each year more information was required to be in compliance with their program. I filled out all the forms as requested from Mars. The first we heard of a problem was when Sam called to schedule a pickup and was told Moultrie County Animal Control was no longer eligible for the program because we do not spay/neuter in house and use an application form for volunteers. If the program changed, we could then reapply.  Read More

Illinois Lieutenant Governor Evelyn Sanguinetti visited with local officials at the Red Apple Restaurant in Sullivan Thursday, July 14.

Charged with reporting rural issues to Governor Bruce Rauner, Lt Gov. Sanguinetti listened to Moultrie County officials in the morning while planning to visit agriculture sites in Iroquois County later in the day.

Sullivan mayor Ann Short expressed concern over the tax increase approved by the state, which leaves the city receiving 2% less revenue.

“Less is less,” Sanuinetti said, noting there are consequences of the new budget. “The governor’s approach includes property tax relief, workman’s comp reform and fair maps,” she continued.  Read More

The Sullivan Rotary Club has been a long time supporter of the One Book One Sullivan program and a new gofundme site has now been created to help raise funds.

Since 2007 a group of Sullivan middle school volunteer readers have spent summers reading from the Rebecca Caudill Young Reader’s List to select that One Book that students and the community may share during the year.

Poppies to honor those who gave all

News Progress

On Friday, May 22nd, Ruth Keown, Vice-President of the Sullivan American Legion Auxiliary Unit 68, greeted the public at the entrance to the local Post Office, distributing Memorial Poppies. Each year, millions of Americans wear these Memorial Poppies in memory of American service members who lost their lives in war while serving their country, and to assist those Veterans who are now hospitalized or in rehabilitation, suffering from wounds and illnesses. Memorial Day poppies distributed by the American Legion symbolize the ultimate sacrifice made by service members and are a tribute to those who lost their lives in war. Wearing the poppy is a way to honor the fallen and ensure their bravery is never forgotten.
