While waiting in an office the other day I picked up an old friend – The Prairie Farmer- which was a staple reading material in our home when I was growing up. The magazine celebrates its 175th birthday this year making it the nation’s oldest continuously published magazine since it began in 1841.

Turns out, Abraham Lincoln was a subscriber, and it may have helped shape his ideals as president.

Lincoln was raised on a hard scrabble farm in Kentucky where only 13 of the 30 acres were suitable for farming so he knew how hard it was to eke out a living on a farm. He rode through the farms of central Illinois and lived among the farmers so he was acquainted with the farmers’ lives and issues. Read More

Animal Shelter Resolves Feed Issue

News Progress Posted on July 12, 2017 by webmasterJuly 11, 2017

•July 12, 2017•

Since loss of a program that provided Moultrie County with free food for cats and dogs at the county animal shelter, the county has looked to other sources.

Animal control director Rick Matthews reported earlier that Moultrie County was no longer eligible for a free feed program from Mars Petcare.

Matthews noted the $3000 annual benefit was discontinued because pets adopted from the Moultrie County Animal Shelter are not given shots before they leave. Instead people who adopt pets in the county sign a form committing to get the pet proper shots afterwards, not having to incur the additional expense from the county.  Read More

25 Years Ago This Week

Sweet Charity features Little Theatre on the Square choreographer Millie Garvey as Charity, the dancing dance hall hostess with a heart of gold who delivers Neil Simon’s comedic lines with ease.

An electrical short in the bedroom of Bethany resident Ron White’s house caused a blaze that was extinguished by Bethany firefighters in about 15 minutes.

As follow up to B.B.’s first tomato story Bob Best reported that Jack Cole had started sweet corn in his greenhouse and transplanted to rows. The result of the early efforts of Cole and his grandchildren produced some of the earliest and best sweet corn around according to the News Progress publisher.

Summer Break Is No Excuse; Cavities, Gum Disease Don’t Take Vacation

News Progress Posted on July 12, 2017 by webmasterJuly 11, 2017

•July 12, 2017•

For most children and teenagers, the start of summer break means three months of sleeping in late, trips to the beach, summer vacations, camps and other activities there just wasn’t time for when school was still in session.

But while the break brings with it a relaxed environment, it’s important to keep a regular routine when it comes to oral health.

For nine months out of the year, kids are generally regimented. They brush, floss and rinse with mouthwash before bed, then repeat that routine before they head to school the next morning. Once summer rolls around, though, that routine can easily slip away, leaving negative consequences in its place. Read More

Poppies to honor those who gave all

News Progress

On Friday, May 22nd, Ruth Keown, Vice-President of the Sullivan American Legion Auxiliary Unit 68, greeted the public at the entrance to the local Post Office, distributing Memorial Poppies. Each year, millions of Americans wear these Memorial Poppies in memory of American service members who lost their lives in war while serving their country, and to assist those Veterans who are now hospitalized or in rehabilitation, suffering from wounds and illnesses. Memorial Day poppies distributed by the American Legion symbolize the ultimate sacrifice made by service members and are a tribute to those who lost their lives in war. Wearing the poppy is a way to honor the fallen and ensure their bravery is never forgotten.
