New Aerial Photographs Offered County Municipalities

Aerial photographs taken for property tax assessment and e911 will be shared with county municipalities if a recommendation from the Moultrie County GIS streering committee receives county board approval.

Committee chair Kevin McReynolds reported Sullivan, Dalton City, Arthur and Allenville had partial ownership with the county of original aerial photos taken in 2002 for the supervisor of assessment’s office.

“Sullivan has used the GIS, but the other communities have gotten little use,” McReynolds said, noting any changes in the past required each village’s approval. Read More

NAMI Learns About Stress Related Disorders

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) of Effingham County held its monthly support group meeting featuring Dr., Monica Uddin.

Dr. Uddin is a U of I professor of psychology who spoke on her research into stress related mental health disorders with an emphasis on PTSD. Read More

Assistance Available For Relatives Raising Children

Relatives Raising Children, formerly Grandparents Raising Children, is a 15 year-old program at the Senior Center for any relative who is raising a child. The name change was necessary because, more and more, the aunts, sisters, and other relatives besides grandparents are now responsible for raising a relative’s child or children. Read More

Illinois Products Expo Offers ‘Taste Of Illinois Agriculture’

This year the 19th annual Illinois Products Expo will offer a ‘Taste of Illinois agriculture’ as visitors will be able to taste, sample and purchase all of what Illinois has to offer. Dozens of Illinois food companies, wineries and agricultural associations will take part in the upcoming agricultural showcase on the Illinois State Fairgrounds.

The Expo’s food offerings will include fresh meat products, pizza, sauces, homemade jellies and jams, ice cream, and gourmet seasonings all produced, packaged or processed in Illinois. There will also be non-food items, such as soy candles and agricultural-based soaps and lotions on display and available for purchase. Sullivan Civic Women Hold Meeting

Ann Wheeler, a candidate for the Sullivan School Board, and Stepheny McMahon, a representative of the 100 Women Who Care organization, were the guest speakers at the Feb. 13 meeting of the Sullivan Civic Women’s Club.

The SCWC voted to increase their scholarship amounts to four scholarships in the amount of $600 each. Sullivan High School seniors may pick up applications for the scholarships at the high school.  Read More

Shimkus Sending Staff Member to Bethany

Congressman John Shimkus (R, Illinois-15) has a tradition of having his staff hold office hours in addition to those he holds himself. This is an opportunity to meet with someone from Shimkus’ office in Bethany.

“These office hours allow you to meet face to face with my staff instead of over the telephone or having to drive to Effingham,” Shimkus explained. “The staff person will be able to handle any issue you may have regarding my office or the federal government.” Read More

Poppies to honor those who gave all

On Friday, May 22nd, Ruth Keown, Vice-President of the Sullivan American Legion Auxiliary Unit 68, greeted the public at the entrance to the local Post Office, distributing Memorial Poppies. Each year, millions of Americans wear these Memorial Poppies in memory of American service members who lost their lives in war while serving their country, and to assist those Veterans who are now hospitalized or in rehabilitation, suffering from wounds and illnesses. Memorial Day poppies distributed by the American Legion symbolize the ultimate sacrifice made by service members and are a tribute to those who lost their lives in war. Wearing the poppy is a way to honor the fallen and ensure their bravery is never forgotten.
