Kristina Burford of Bethany has been named recipient of the 2017 Charles B. Shuman Memorial Scholarship sponsored by the Moultrie County Farm Bureau.
Ms. Burford is the daughter of Paul Burford and Elizabeth Burford. Kristina is currently a senior at Okaw Valley High School. Kristina plans to attend Lake Land College and then transfer to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. She plans to study Ag Education. Read More

The Library Advisory Board of Booth Library at Eastern Illinois University recently honored a Sullivan student as a winner of the 2017 Award for Excellence in Student Research and Creativity.
Christina Farley, a senior majoring in music education, was honored for her research project, “Body Consciousness: The Effects of Posture on Musicians’ Performance Anxiety.” Farley is a 2012 graduate of Sullivan High School and the daughter of Roger and Amanda Farley.
She was honored at a reception April 12.
The Booth Library Awards for Excellence in Student Research and Creativity program promotes and recognizes excellence in student research. The program encourages students to enhance their studies by utilizing the wealth of information available at Booth Library and other research venues. Read More

Legislation requiring life insurance companies to look back to 1996 to identify policy holders who have died and the benefits have not been claimed or paid to their loved ones passed the Illinois House today, Illinois Treasurer Michael Frerichs said.
The Illinois House passed the proposal (HB 302) by a vote of 68-47. The proposal now goes to the Senate for consideration.
“We must continue to stand up for Illinois consumers and make sure they are getting what they are owed from insurance companies,” Frerichs said. “For decades, we know some life insurance companies manipulated the rules to avoid paying death benefits, and that dishonest practice to help pad their bottom line at the expense of the deceased needs to stop.” Read More

The Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS) was awarded a federal grant for over $16 million to fight Illinois’ opioid crisis. The grant is funded through the 21st Century Cures Act which includes an estimated $1 billion to states over the next two years to combat the nation’s opioid crises. Grants will be administered by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration under the State Targeted Response to the Opioid Crisis Grant program. Read More

Federal funding for meals on wheels is on the chopping block. The Trump administration budget blueprint released in March calls for the elimination of two federal block grants: That’s money the federal government gives the states for social welfare programs, and those programs include home-delivered meals and meals served in senior centers.
Most of the nation’s 5,000 meal programs also rely on money from the Older Americans Act passed in 1965 to fund about 35 percent of the cost of the meals they serve. Those funds are also in jeopardy. The budget blueprint calls for an 18 percent cut to the budget of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), which administers the Act, and programs are bracing for more cuts.
Paul Kraintz who heads the senior nutrition program at Meals on Wheels in Martinez, California, says while his program would lose about $67,000 it now gets from one of the block grants, he’s really worried about the potential budget cut at HHS. “If they take 18 percent of that, it’s going to be big.” Read More

A shift in investment strategy that embraced longer-term investments and higher yields allowed the state to more than double its investment income to $26 million in the first quarter of this year, Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs said today.
The shift is possible after an analysis showed that core investment strategies could be more aggressive and still follow the office’s primary objective to ensure the safety of principal.
“We had too many overnight investments that precluded us from earning higher rates,” Frerichs said. Read More

The Okaw Valley Athletic Boosters will host a Music Trivia Night at Tailwinds Steakhouse in Findlay 8:30 p.m. to 11:30.p.m. Saturday, May 6. Doors open at 7:30pm.
Entry to the competition is $200 per table with up to five players per team, ages 18 and up. Prizes include $200 for first place, $100 for second place and $50 for third place.
This event includes not only the trivia competition but also a 50/50 raffle, lottery tree, silent auction, cash bar, and complimentary taco bar for all players.
