Lake Shelbyville’s tree stand policy for this year will remain the same as it was last season. The policy allows hunters to leave one stand up for the season (“Seasonal Tree Stand”) and/or utilize a “Roving” stand that may be left up for a period not to exceed a break in use greater than 72 hours - the length of a three day weekend. Seasonal tree stands may be placed two weeks prior to archery season and must be removed within two weeks of archery season ending. Archery season runs from October 1, 2016 - January 17, 2017. Many parents are preparing their children to head back to school, which includes making sure they have all their needed immunizations. And while immunization is one of the most important things parents can do to protect their children from serious diseases, during National Immunization Awareness Month this August, the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) would also like to remind those parents and others that immunizations are important for people of all ages.
“The need for vaccines does not end in childhood. Immunizations are recommended throughout our lives based on age, lifestyle, occupation, travel destinations, medical conditions, and vaccines received in the past,” said IDPH Director Nirav D. Shah, M.D., J.D. “Immunization not only protects the person receiving the vaccine, but also helps prevent the spread of disease, especially to those who are most vulnerable, such as infants, the elderly, and those with chronic conditions and weakened immune systems. I encourage all adults to check their immunization status during National Immunization Awareness Month and talk with their health care provider.” Read More

It’s hard to tell whether it was a few comforting words to settle her sheep down or her technique, but both earned Tonya Doty of Lovington showmanship honors at the conclusion of the sheep show last weekend during the Moultrie Sullivan 4-H and Junior Fair.
4-H Horticulture judging completed the judging events in the 1991 Moultrie-Sullivan 4-H and Jr. Fair. Best of Show for vegetable gardening went to Beth Parsons of Bethany. State Fair delegates include Beth Parsons, Erin Parsons and Nicole McCabe, all of Bethany—vegetable gardening; Carrie Jackson of Lovington—terrarium; Sarah Jackson of Lovington—flower arranging; and Ryan Cobb of Sullivan—herb gardening.
Lovington 4-H’ers took top honors during the Moultrie County 4-H and Junior Livestock Show held last weekend at the 4-H Center. Joy Day of Lovington showed the Grand Champion English Bred Steer in the beef show, and Marissa Bolsen of Lovington took top swine show honors with the Grand Champion Barrow. In the Sheep Show Tonya Doty of Lovington was the owner of the 4-H show grand champion. July was a beautiful month as we enjoyed the coneflowers, hibiscus, lilies and other seasonal flowers blooming. The roses have continuously bloomed, and the butterfly bushes have been attracting butterflies.
Even through the extreme heat, the beauty of gardening is all around us. Our blackberry harvest was very bountiful…we have enjoyed the berries in smoothies and have collected about seven gallons for the freezer.
Tomatoes and peppers have been maturing, and I have enjoyed taking sliced peppers and cherry tomatoes to work as snacks to help pull me through the long 12 hour shifts.
We have been continuing to work on the garden and thin out some of the varieties. Thorned raspberries are being eliminated to be replaced by the thornless blackberries, and the low strawberry patches are being grassed to make maintenance easier.
Gardening is fun especially when you can test what is working and what isn’t and rearranging and trying out new plants. When I started my garden here in Sullivan, I was providing for a family of five kids and two adults…now that it is 10 years later, it isn’t as important to grow as much produce for just three of us.
