Shimkus’ Staff To Be In Lovington July 9

Congressman John Shimkus (R, Illinois-15) will have a member of his staff in Moultrie County 10:30 a.m-noon Wednesday, July 9 at the Lovington Village Hall, 222 South Railroad Street.

“These office hours allow you to meet face to face with my staff instead of over the telephone or having to drive to Effingham or Danville,” Shimkus explained. “The staff person will be able to handle any issue you may have regarding my office or the federal government.” Read More

Summer Popcorn and a Movie Program at Elizabeth Titus

Elizabeth Titus Memorial Library’s summer popcorn and a movie program will begin on July 11 and be held each Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. with the last program occurring August 8. Pre-registration is not required with all programs free; children don’t need a library card to attend and parents / caregivers may stay and enjoy the movie and popcorn too. Children may bring a drink, snack, lunch or pillow. A staff member will stay in the room to ensure everyone behaves properly and the noise level is kept to a minimum.

International High School Exchange Students Seeking Host Families in Sullivan

Lake Land College Recognizes Students at Annual Banquet

Lake Land College honored its students’ achievements at the annual Student Recognition Banquet held recently in Mattoon.

More than 130 students were officially recognized at the event hosted by the Student Government Association.

Students were recognized for their academic achievements, elected offices, and organizational roles for the academic year.  Read More

Fourth quarter honor rolls have been announced for the following schools:

Lovington Grade School

Two eighth graders, three seventh graders and three six graders received “A” honors for the fourth quarter at Lovington Grade School. They include Samuel Renfro and Kolby Rickman, eighth grade; Hunter Day, Sean Evans and Katelyn Gingerich, seventh grade and Natalie Lambdin, Norene Mast and Kenli Nettles, sixth grade. Read More

Harvey Named New Manager for Mo-Do Farm Bureaus

Tyler Harvey of Villa Grove has recently been named the new manager for the Douglas and Moultrie County Farm Bureaus.

Harvey obtained a B.S. from Illinois State University in 2007 with a major in general agriculture and a minor in history and then continued at Illinois State earning a master’s degree in agricultural education and leadership. 

He started his career with the Illinois Farm Bureau in November of 2011 when he was hired through the county manager trainee program. Harvey has been the county manager of the Lawrence County Farm Bureau for the past two years.  Read More

Lake Shelbyville Quilt Show Begins Tues.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Lake Shelbyville will host a quilt show Tuesday, July 8 to Sunday, July 13 at the Lake Shelbyville Visitor Center during normal hours of operation. The Visitor Center is open 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 9:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Moultrie-Douglas 4-H Youth Win Unit 19 Cooking Challenge

In March Moultrie-Douglas 4-H began a six week cooking club to learn skills in kitchen safety, flours, fats, spices, and substitutes. The sixth week they competed with other clubs within Unit 19 to see which club could make the best recipe using unknown ingredients.

“Together, We Give Back to School”

Sullivan Elementary School recently received 60 backpacks filled with school supplies through Amazon’s “Together, We Give Back to School” campaign. End of the Line Tackle & Bait, an Amazon delivery partner, nominated Sullivan Elementary for the program, and the school’s submission was selected to receive the donation. Pictured (left to right) are Cameron Martin, Taylor Lilly, James Martin, Marla Martin and Angela McRill following the July 27 delivery.
