SES Receives Spotlight Award
Sullivan Elementary School has been selected by the Illinois State Board of Education as a 2013 spotlight school. The spotlight award recognizes a high-poverty school where academic performance is closing the achievement gap. SES was one of 37 spotlight schools located in urban, suburban, and rural areas earning honors this year. SES was also the second largest elementary school with 542 students with 51.8 percent deemed low-income students in 2013. Read More

Senior Education Ministries, Inc. in partnership with the Sullivan community has scheduled Dr. Jeffrey Brummer, D.O. of Family Care Associates of Effingham for next month’s Dine with a Doc®.
The program will be held from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on May 6 in the Max J. Knight Community Building Banquet Hall located at Mason Point. The program is free and welcomes the local senior public to hear an educational topic while enjoying a complimentary lunch. Read More

Eastern Illinois Foodbank will distribute a truckload of food to hungry area families at Okaw Valley High School 9-11 a.m. May 3. Historic Farms Still Being Accepted for Upcoming Book
The publisher of an upcoming book honoring historic family-owned farms in Illinois says initial response to their publicity campaign has been overwhelming, despite the fact that a large number of farm owners still haven’t heard about the project.
The coffee-table book, “Illinois Historic Farms: Honoring the State’s Enduring Heritage of Family-Owned Farms,” will feature histories of family-owned farms that have been certified by the Illinois Department of Agriculture as Centennial or Sesquicentennial Farms, as well as photos and stories documenting the history of agriculture in the state. Shimkus Supports Right-To-Carry Reciprocity
Congressman John Shimkus (R, Illinois-15) is cosponsoring legislation that would allow someone with a valid concealed carry permit in one state to legally carry in another state.
“The National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act (HR 2959) is pretty simple,” Shimkus explained. “If you can legally carry in Illinois – now that we have finally started issuing concealed carry permits – you should be allowed to carry in other states. Read More
