Rose Legislation to Help Transition Laid Off Workers Back to Employment

State Sen. Chapin Rose (R-Mahomet) is looking to expand the MAP Grant application process to help provide much-needed financial assistance to displaced workers.

“Local community colleges called a critical problem to my attention: that the existing MAP rules completely discriminate against those who’ve been laid off,” Rose said. “It just makes sense to move these displaced workers into an educational setting instead of having them on the unemployment rolls.” Read More

Domestic Violence Education and Volunteer Training in May, June

Training is available for individuals interested in educating themselves on the issues surrounding domestic violence. The training will take place from 1-5 p.m. on May 19-22, 27-30 and June 2-4 at Dove’s 302 S. Union, Dean Simcox Conference Center in Decatur.

This training is approved by ICADV (Illinois Coalition Against Domestic Violence) and facilitated by Dove and other community agencies’ staff members. There is a fee for the training, and some scholarships are available. Read More

Beatty Appointed to Council of Regents

Marla Beatty of Bethany, an administrator at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, has been appointed to the Council of Regents, the legislative body of the American College of Healthcare Executives. The Council of Regents serves as the link between ACHE and members by approving governance and membership regulations as well as promoting ACHE programs, services and activities within their respective areas.  Read More

Cox Earns Master’s Degree From SIU

Students Receive Prizes on McTeacher Night

Students recently attended McTeacher Night at the local McDonald’s and had their names drawn for some incredible prizes. McDonald’s in Sullivan has sponsored McTeacher Night for the last 10 years and donates $1,000 annually to the Sullivan PTO. They have given away a total of $10,000 in cash and $5,000 in prizes over the last 10 years. This year’s winners include Skyla Palmer, Lucy Barringer, Ryan Lawyer, Jayden Troxell, Kiley Dyer, Reagan Crouse, Matt Welch, Curtis Kite, Drew Rogers. and Mitchell Hooten.

“Together, We Give Back to School”

Sullivan Elementary School recently received 60 backpacks filled with school supplies through Amazon’s “Together, We Give Back to School” campaign. End of the Line Tackle & Bait, an Amazon delivery partner, nominated Sullivan Elementary for the program, and the school’s submission was selected to receive the donation. Pictured (left to right) are Cameron Martin, Taylor Lilly, James Martin, Marla Martin and Angela McRill following the July 27 delivery.
