One Stop Community Christmas Back for 2013

Volunteers are gearing up for the third annual holiday assistance program, One Stop Community Christmas (OSCC), which will assist those in need in Coles, Cumberland, Shelby, Douglas, Moultrie, Edgar and Clark counties.

The goal of OSCC is to put the spotlight on the family during the Christmas season. Last year more than 300 volunteers helped serve nearly 1,600 children.  Read More

Mo-Do 4-H Fundraiser

Members of the Moultrie-Douglas County 4-H program are required to pay a program fee to be in 4-H.

Following the 4-H achievement program Saturday, the group is planning a live and silent auction to raise money to cover this cost. The Achievement Program will begin at 1 p.m. with the auction event to immediately follow. Monies collected will be used for the 4-H program fee.

Missions Conference Set at New Life Church

New Life Church of Sullivan is hosting its 2013 Mission Conference Friday evening and Sunday morning, with guest speakers in each session.

The schedule is as follows:

7 p.m. Friday, October 25: Dr. Mark Barclay, known worldwide as a Preacher of Righteousness, and founding pastor of Living Word International Church in Midland, Mich., will speak. For more than 25 years, he has traveled the world, preaching the uncompromised Word of God. He is the author of many books and loves to teach and provide leadership. The weekly national telecast hosted by Pastor Barclay reaches millions of people with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Read More

Findlay Legion to Host Halloween Activities

The Findlay Legion Auxiliary will host their annual Halloween supper 5-7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25. Chicken and noodles, BBQ sandwiches, chili, cheese salad, peanut butter sandwiches, deviled eggs, potato salad, dessert, and drinks will be served. The annual Halloween parade will begin at 7 p.m. at Butch’s Mini Mart led by the Okaw Valley Marching Timberwolves. Costume judging will begin in the Legion Hall after the parade.  Read More

SHS Alumni Awards

Submitted Who's Who Award Stanley Dolan, 89, a 1941 SHS graduate, was the recipient of this year’s Who’s Who Award. Dolan was presented and introduced by his son Dave. The WWII vet grew up on a farm near Sullivan and attended a one room school house. Dolan went on to work at Taber Grain/ADM and has served along with his wife Mary Margaret as the overseers of the New Life Ministry Center. Pictured left to right are Sullivan school board chairman Steve Poland, Mary Margaret Dolan, Stanley Dolan, and Dave Dolan.

Who's Who Award

Submitted Hall of Fame Recipient David Walter Whitaker, SHS class of 1980, was this year’s recipient of the Hall of Fame honor. Whitaker was presented and introduced by his sister Pam Whitaker Buckalew. Whitaker, who’s early interest and passion was in Future Farmers of America, went on to earn an undergraduate degree in agricultural science at the University of Illinois followed by a master’s degree in plant breeding from the University of Minnesota. Whitaker then went on to fulfill a successful career as a research scientist, developing different hybrid seeds. Whitaker has earned several awards for his work over the years including, but not limited to, the 2008 co-recipient of the Pioneer Hybrid of the Year, 2010 Pioneer Inbred of the Year, co-recipient of the 2013 DuPont Bolton/Carothers Innovative Science Award, and the International Hybrid of the Year Award by Pioneer in 2008. “Together, We Give Back to School”

Sullivan Elementary School recently received 60 backpacks filled with school supplies through Amazon’s “Together, We Give Back to School” campaign. End of the Line Tackle & Bait, an Amazon delivery partner, nominated Sullivan Elementary for the program, and the school’s submission was selected to receive the donation. Pictured (left to right) are Cameron Martin, Taylor Lilly, James Martin, Marla Martin and Angela McRill following the July 27 delivery.
