Dr. Gregory Mauck has successfully defended his master’s thesis and been granted a Master of Arts in History Degree with Distinction from Liberty University. Jacob Robert Adams of Sullivan received a $1,000 scholarship from the CHS Foundation, the major giving entity of CHS Inc., a leading global agribusiness owned by farmers, ranchers and cooperatives across the United States.
The Mo-Co Rush 12U competed in the Santa Claus Classic in Santa Claus, Ind. and went 5-0 to win the championship. The 12U Rush currently stood at 46-20 on the season. Players included Lindsey Mast, Destiny Williams, Allie Dunn, Liberty Dunaway, Jo Barbee, Addi Tinkle, and Delaney Melton. July 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th is Summer Reading from 10-11 a.m. We have all kinds of activities planned.
We will be closed on July 4th for Independence Day.
July 5th is Recipe Swap all day. Bring in your favorite sloppy joe recipes and we will swap ours for yours.

In my last visit with you, I finally told you the location of the ancient sunken road at Nelson Ford on the Kaskaskia River. I also said that mastodons, mammoths, and bison may have made it. It is so worn down that it would have taken ages of erosion and trampling feet to create it.
We know that mastodons once roamed Moultrie County for they found a skeleton of one west of Lake City, according to Ernie Winnings. A mammoth tooth was found in Welsh’s Gravel Pit and bison bones were all over the prairie when pioneers first arrived.
If ancient animals and man used this old trail leading out of the center of the Old Bend towards the river on the south, there had to be a way to get into it from the north. However, steep bluffs lined the north side of Old Bend, and I knew of no roads coming down the bluffs. Read More

Dameron C-5 Nellie 2145 won reserve grand champion owned female at the 2024 Eastern Regional Junior Angus Show, June 7-9 in Harrisburg, Pa. Quentin Day, Lovington, Ill., owns the September 2022 daughter of PVF Marvel 9185. She earlier won senior champion. Britney Creamer, Montrose, Colo., judged the females, bulls, cow-calf pairs and steers; and David Dal Porto, Anselmo, Neb., judged the phenotype and genotype females..There was a total of 239 entries.

Bethany held their annual Bethany Celebration this past weekend. Activities started on Thursday evening with the Miss Bethany pageants. The new Royalty for 2024 includes Miss Deanna Clark, Junior Miss Adi O’Dell, Young Miss Abbie Flood, and Little Miss Brynley Liles-French. The queens were available during the weekend to hostess and help with other activities. Friday night included Opening Ceremonies with the singing of the National Anthem by Annie Flood and presentation of Marge Overlot as this year’s Grand Marshall. Other events Friday night included Tot-Rod pedal pulls, Touch a Truck, Sullivan Dance Studio Showcase, and DJ Nidal. Saturdays events featured a parade, softball tournament, bags tournament and mud volleyball. Kid events included Sally the Clown, inflatables and a free water station to cool off. BASO held a car show that awarded Top 5 and Best of Show. Main Stage events on Saturday were Shawn Dawson and hometown boy, Ed Webb and Night Moves. Entertainment in the beer tent was provided by Large Marge, Tyson Schulte and Country Sky. Organizers Kaytie Orris and Cassandra Lambdin were pleased with the turnout this year and have already begun thinking ahead to next year’s event. They thank all the volunteers for helping put on the Celebration as it takes a village to put on an event of this size. From virtual Texas Hold ‘Em to organizational communication and wildlife resource management, members of the Lake Land College Honors Program have been conducting undergraduate research this year in a variety of topics. Several Honors Program students recently presented their findings at the annual honors luncheon where they were also recognized for their achievements. There were six members of the Honors Program this year, including Adriene Lane, a speech communication major from Sullivan who graduated from Okaw Valley in 2013.
Roger Bragg and Jon England, owners of Sullivan EK Petroleum, do their share when it comes to giving back to the community. According to the two owners, since 2012, EK has donated over $6,000 to scholarship funds for local schools by donating a penny per gallon of gas. The company has also supported the Sullivan athletic fund through events such as the Three for Three Point Challenge where $3 is donated for every three-point shot made. Read More

The annual Moultrie-Douglas 4-H Fair is set to showcase the talents and dedication of local 4-H members with a series of events taking place June 30, July 9, and July 10. This year’s fair features a diverse lineup, including general project displays and livestock shows, culminating in a special Ag Day celebration. The fair will be held at various locations, including the Arthur United Methodist Church and the Moultrie-Douglas County Fairgrounds.
June 30: General Projects Show
The fair kicks off with the General Projects Show at the Arthur United Methodist Church. Registration begins at 2:00 p.m., and the show starts at 2:30. The show welcomes over fifty 4-H members bringing their projects to be judged. The projects showcase the knowledge, growth, and challenge the youth endured to produce something they are proud of. At the General Projects show, members will be judged in a conference style hoping to be selected to show their projects at the Illinois State Fair. Read More

Lovington VBS
The annual Lovington Vacation Bible school was held June 12-15. The Thursday and Friday evening sessions were held in the fellowship hall of Lovington Christian Church and the Saturday session was held at the Thomas Conn Park. There were 20 children on Thursday 27 on Friday and 31 on Saturday. The theme was based on a TV station, WBIBLE, and the Bible stories were presented as the evening news. The lessons for all three sessions were based on FAITH + ACTION = MIRACLES.
The children participated in arts and crafts, ate lots of good food including ice cream and had a great time. The staff of Lovington VBS waants to thank the community for sending their children to learn about miracles in the Bible. Meals were provided at each session.

Finding the Sunken Road

When I was a kid, the easiest way to get down the steep bluff to our favorite fishing hole on the Kaskaskia that ran through our timber pasture was to follow one of the many cow paths left by our Black Angus cattle herd. After over a hundred years of their trips down to get a drink or cool off in the river, their narrow slopping trails were worn deep into the hillsides.
When Lake Shelbyville took our timber pasture in the early 1960s, our beautiful park-like oak and hickory timber that our grandfather and cattle had kept clear of brush soon became a jungle of non-native bush honeysuckle that the Corps or IDNR planted around the lake’s property for wildlife. Nevertheless, after fifty years, the cow paths are still there. Apparently, once a trail is made it stays!
That’s true of the ancient Royal Road in Crete that connects Knossos to the sea. It is a classic sunken road that’s been worn down about 10 feet into the hillside from four thousand years of use. Read More
