Red Cross Helped 15 People Affected by Home Fires in the Past Week

The Illinois Region, as well as millions of people across the U.S. are facing extreme heat this week as record-breaking high temperatures scorch the country.

Experts are warning that much of the U.S. could be facing hotter than normal conditions this summer as the climate crisis drives higher temperatures. 2023 was the hottest year on record, and scientists warn that 2024 could break records for a second year in a row. Unusually hot days and heat waves are both a natural part of our weather patterns, however, since the 1960s, heat waves have become more frequent and intense, and are lasting longer in the U.S. Read More

Keep your furry friends safe in hot weather

•June 19, 2024•

Hot weather can prove dangerous for your furry friends and the American Red Cross has steps you can take to help your pets stay safe this summer.

Don’t leave your pet in a hot vehicle, even for a few minutes. The inside temperature of the car can quickly reach 120 degrees even with the windows cracked open.

• Keep all unscreened windows or doors closed so pets don’t fall out of them.

• Trim longer hair, but never shave your dog. Read More

2014

The Lovington Public Library district has announced the retirement of library director Suzy Saunders effective June 30, following 20 years of service.

It could have been contentious, but in an anti-climactic, routine village board meeting last week Lovington trustees voted five to one against allowing the sale of package alcohol on Sundays within the village.

Sullivan High School alumna Maggie Plank signed her letter of intention to compete in volleyball at Omaha, Nebraska’s Grace University. Read More

Since 2017, Sullivan has been actively planning and producing the annual Bash and Bash. The Dash and Bash is a family friendly day long event in Sullivan where fun is in the name. The event started bright and early at seven for the 5k run/walk registration for the race, which started just an hour later at eight. Closer to ten the car show registration opened and just thirty minutes later the Legion had a tent set up outside where food was served, lemonade shakeups were also opening at the same time. By this time it is 11, getting closer to lunch and with more people arriving another guest food option arrived. Pretzels from a pre-order pick-up were now available to be picked up inside the Legion. The afternoon was overall the best part of the whole day. Once it stuck noon, the beer tent was opened and DJ Iceman provided some of the crowds favorite music. The Duck Derby had a great go, there was a bit of a rough start with some wind issues and the ducks not wanting to all leave the designated area on launch. On the Sullivan Dash and Bash facebook page there is a past live video of the duck derby that happened on Saturday. Read More

There were also many artisan booths, some with bake sale items and freeze dried candy while others had hand made crafts like keychains and hand knit towels. The Lovington VBS was there was well handing out candy to anyone and everyone of all ages.  There was no time for messing around this weekend if you were a kid, there was also free entertainment provided for children at Junefest, including bounce houses, obstacle courses, face painting, a rock wall and an extreme air bungee jumping simulator. There was live music produced by the duo Jake & Mikayla. At dusk, fireworks were set off to end the overall great turn out of this Lovington Junefest.

Poppies to honor those who gave all

News Progress

On Friday, May 22nd, Ruth Keown, Vice-President of the Sullivan American Legion Auxiliary Unit 68, greeted the public at the entrance to the local Post Office, distributing Memorial Poppies. Each year, millions of Americans wear these Memorial Poppies in memory of American service members who lost their lives in war while serving their country, and to assist those Veterans who are now hospitalized or in rehabilitation, suffering from wounds and illnesses. Memorial Day poppies distributed by the American Legion symbolize the ultimate sacrifice made by service members and are a tribute to those who lost their lives in war. Wearing the poppy is a way to honor the fallen and ensure their bravery is never forgotten.
