Shoot for a Turkey Held at Civic Center
Coach Craig Black and the Sullivan High School Basketball Team organized the Shoot for a Turkey event on Saturday, November 19 in the Sullivan Civic Center gym. Entrants competed in knock out to determine who would receive a certificate for a frozen turkey from Sullivan IGA. Pictured are the SHS Basketball team with the three winners kneeling in front. Winners were (in no order): Brayden Mesnard, Cooper Christensen and Coach Taylor.

Rick Matthews Retires from Moultrie County
Rick Matthews (right) retired as Maintenance Director for Moultrie County on Monday, October 31 after almost 18 years of service. As part of his send off he rang the bell at the Moultrie County Courthouse. Jef Liddiard (left) was hired on September 1 to work as maintenance director upon Matthew’s retirement.

Sullivan Dance Studio had 10 Competition Dance team members attend Revel—The Dance Convention Revelation Radiate You Tour in St. Louis, Missouri on October 21, 22 & 23, 2022. Mini Level dancers were Natalia Beals and Fionn Lynch. The mini level dancers all got to perform in the final showcase and even had a fun Dance Party during one of their sessions. Junior level dancers from SDS Competition Team were Gabrielle Carpenter, Avery Florey, Adalee Foster, Lillian Hood, Aleena Ingram, and Miah Voegel. Special shout out to Lillian Hood for being chosen to perform from her level in the final showcase. Zoe Lynch and Sarina Voegel were teen level dancers who attended the convention. Zoe was able to attend bonus classes on Friday night at the convention as well. Revel Dance Convention gave dancers a chance to work diligently with a diverse faculty that included educators and choreographers from all facets of the dance world. Those who attended had a chance to attend ballet, contemporary, hip hop, jazz, jazz funk and tap classes.

Glimmer Nights Dance Held at Building 1225
Moultrie County had its first annual dance for adult community members who have special needs. There were approximately 65 participants from the community that participated in this event. Each participant enjoyed being crowned with a crown or tiara and a personal welcome announcement as they entered the event.
The Glimmer Nights Dance was held on October 15 at Building 1225. The night was full of lots of dancing, a photo booth, a craft, and snacks. It was a night enjoyed by all and we are already looking forward to this being an annual event. This event was hosted through the Sullivan Area Ministerial Services giving monetary donations and community volunteers to make this event happen.

The annual Margie Pondo Memorial Goat Giveaway was held on Monday, October 3 and Tuesday, October 4 at the Sullivan American Legion. According to Jeri Davis, Over the two days, 145 plus families were helped with over 310 children outfitted for winter. Pictured are Memphis and Mason Harper, sons of Jamie Miller trying out their new winter gear.

Dine with a Doc at Senior Center
On Tuesday, October 4, Dine with a Doc program offered by Senior Education Ministries was held at Mid-Illinois Senior Services. Dine with a Doc is a free program that welcomes the local senior public to hear an educational topic while enjoying a complimentary lunch. The program is a community effort of Senior Education Ministries, a doctor, a meal sponsor, area businesses and senior citizens. Each doctor has donated their time and various community businesses also participate by donating door prizes or providing the meal. This month’s guest doctor was L. Kaye DeSelms Dent (right), Doctor of Jurisprudence. Her law practice focuses on estate planning, probate, elder law and she is Medicaid Licensed in Illinois. She was joined for the presentation by Associate Attorney Erica Feldhake (left).

Car Accident at Intersection

Car Accident at Intersection
On Wednesday, September 21 at 1:30 pm there was a car accident at the intersection of South Hamilton and West Water. Due to a City of Sullivan vehicle being involved the Moultrie County Sheriff’s Office handled the investigation. There were no injuries. A ticket was issued to the driver of the car.

Dawkins NEHS submission wows

Mae Dawkins, a Sullivan High School senior and member of the National English Honor Society, was recently informed that she is a national winner of the NEHS Intellectual Freedom Challenge, a prestigious competition that encourages NEHS members to craft compelling arguments defending texts that have faced challenges and bans. Her essay scored among some of the best submissions in the nation by university professors. May was awarded a certificate and a $150 dollar prize.
