Head On Crash Near Arthur

Photo by RR Best Head On Crash Near Arthur Kevin A. Smith, 23, of Lovington was seriously injured in a head on crash Thursday, January 14 on Route 133 west of Arthur. An Illinois State Police District 10 trooper was called to the scene of the collision at 7:52 a.m. January 14 near the County Road 1600 intersection with Route 133. According to Trooper Tracy Lillard’s report, Smith was traveling east on Route 133 in his 1986 GMC pickup when he lost control on the frost covered roadway. Smith’s pickup crossed the center line during a 282 feet slide, into the path of a westbound 2002 Alero driven by Dustin M. Stutzman of Arthur. Smith was transported by AirLife helicopter from the crash scene to an area hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the traffic crash. Stutzman refused medical treatment. Smith was issued a citation for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

The high school student of the month is Kristen Morlen, daughter of Robert and Misty Reed. She is a senior and involved with Scholastic Bowl, Drama Club, Art Club, WYSE, Physics Club, ECO Team, Team Quest, DARE Role Model, Pep Club, NHS, and drum line. She plans to attend Lake Land College to obtain an associate’s degree and become an administrative assistant. The junior high student of the month is Max Carr, son of Wally and Jennifer Carr. He participates in band, Scholastic Bowl, and Team Quest. He plans to be a missionary after high school. Pictured L to R: Max Carr and Kristen Morlen

Clark, Chief Engineer of the Bethany Fire District. Following the 11 a.m. January 12 services at McMullin-Young Funeral Home in Sullivan the Bethany Fire District led Clark’s procession to Marrowbone Cemetery in Bethany where Sullivan and Mt Zion Fire District ladder trucks displayed the American Flag at the entry. Bethany American Legion Post #507 performed military rites. Serving the fire district for more than two decades, Clark was also a member of the Okaw Fire Association and Bethany American Legion Post.

Wind Flips Tractor-trailer on Cadwell Road

Photo courtesy Moultrie County Sheriff’s Dept. As the wind and rain picked up around noon Wednesday, Dec. 23 trucker Floyd Jones of Cowden was traveling on Cadwell Road near Jonathan Creek. According to chief deputy Gary Carroll, Jones said he noticed a funnel cloud filled with dust, mud and debris coming toward him in the middle of the road. Jones told the deputy that he hit his brakes, and the next thing he knew the tractor-trailer he was driving was on its side in the road. Jones was able to climb out the passenger side of the truck uninjured. Carroll also noted that at about the same time as the high wind incident that turned Jones’ truck over, a power pole snapped in Cadwell causing a power outage and traffic delays.

Photo by Mike Brothers Culvert Upheaval in Sullivan During the heavy rains in and around Sullivan a culvert on Patterson Street failed, taking half the street with it. Chief of Police John Love noted that the road is closed until repairs can be made to the culvert and street, and residents should seek alternative routes.
