Single Car Crash Kills Driver

Photo by Lynn Reed Single Car Crash Kills Driver A Newman man was killed in a single vehicle accident near Gays. At 11:44 p.m. Monday, December 14. The Moultrie County Sheriff’s Office was notified by Coles County Emergency Communications (CECOM) of a single vehicle crash on Illinois Route 16 near Gays.  The driver, James V Dodge 54 of Newman was killed in the crash when his vehicle struck two large wood poles that held a road sign.  Moultrie County Coroner Lynn Reed pronounced Dodge deceased at 12:08 a.m.  The cause of the crash is under investigation by the Moultrie County Sheriff’s Office and the Moultrie County Coroner’s Office.

Sparrows Annual Gift Giving Program, 2015

Photo by Darian Hays Lovington’s charitable non-profit Sparrows completed their annual gift giving program over the weekend. A dozen people gathered at the East End Tavern in downtown Lovington to wrap gifts for 120 children and 11 challenged adults.  The annual Christmas auction was held Dec. 5 with the funds raised used for the toy and clothing shopping for the 120 people on the Sparrow shop list. In addition to wrapped gifts which were delivered Sunday, Lovington residents were also allowed to choose from extra clothing and toys which were on display at the Lovington Ambulance Service Saturday. Windsor FFA  Chapter Applies Vet and Food Science The Windsor FFA chapter went to Clinton for the Vet and Food Science CDEs Dec. 2. Participants were Tucker Cripe, Bailey Fleshner, and Raymond Miller and activities included the proper carrying of a cat, filling a syringe, filling a prescription, tying a knot, equipment identification, and a written test. The team placed sixth overall.  Participants in Food Science were Owen Bridges, Mehria Khan, Kendra Reed, and Gage Sattler. The activities performed were aroma testing, food sanitation and safety scenarios, brand vs. off-brand identification, and a team product development activity. The team placed seventh overall. Photo submitted State Scholars The Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC) has recognized Illinois High School students scholastic achievements for 2016-17. Okaw Valley High School had five students named Illinois State Scholars based on outstanding academic achievement. Those students are Gretchen Macklin, Nicole Miller, Charli Uhlrich, Nick Tipsword and Alex Martin.

Toys for Tots

Photo by Mike Brothers Toys for Tots Toys for Tots is growing in Moultrie County with collection sites such as the one at Los Potros on the square in Sullivan. Los Potros manager Honorio is taking donations and displaying Toys for Tots trains with donors’ names around the counter. Local chapter coordinator Ric Kenney (pictured right) explained folks may make donations at several locations around Moultrie County including EK Petro, Sullivan VFW, Red Apple Restaurant, Monical’s Pizza, Subway, Dolllar General Store, First National Bank, Scott State Bank and First Mid Illinois Bank & Trust. Toys for Tots works with Secret Santa in Sullivan and Sparrows in Lovington to help with their individual toy drives.
