Zachary Taylor

Zachary Louis Taylor, 85, of Clearwater Florida, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his family on May 9, 2017.

Zachary (Zach) was born April 17, 1932 in Westville, Illinois to Zachariah and Margarite Taylor (Alaway). He married the love of his life Edythe (Edy) Ann Blair of Danville, Illinois January 26, 1957 in Danville. He and Edy raised five children; they opened their home to many college students and welcomed foster children throughout their married life. Read More

Sally Jacobson

Sarah “Sally” Tabor Jacobson, 78, passed away in Naples, Florida May 2, 2017 after a brief battle with cancer. She was comforted by the loving presence of Paul, her husband of 56 years, and her family.

Sally was born in Decatur July 29, 1938 to Purvis and Roberta Tabor and was the elder of two daughters. She grew up in Sullivan where she developed a love of music. Sally had a beautiful soprano voice and sang in both formal church choirs and in informal settings with friends and family. She also was an accomplished pianist and played throughout her life. After graduating from Chatham Hall in 1956, Sally attended the University of Michigan where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Education. During her freshman year at Michigan she met Paul Jacobson, whom she wed shortly after their graduation in 1960.  Read More

Ezra J. Plank, 97, of Lovington died at1:45 p.m. Wednesday, May 10, 2017 in St. Mary’s Hospital in Decatur.

Funeral services were held at 9 a.m. May 14 in the HCK West Building near Arthur. Burial was in Otto Cemetery in Arthur. Edwards Funeral Home in Arcola assisted with arrangements. Read More

A memorial service for Roger G. Perry, 63, of rural Findlay was held at noon Saturday, May 13 in Howe and Yockey Funeral Home in Shelbyville. Burial followed in Wright Cemetery in Findlay.

Russell Dean Baker, 90, of Sullivan, passed away at 8:49 a.m., Tuesday, May 9, 2017 in St. Mary’s Hospital in Decatur.

As per Russell’s wishes, no services will be held.

Russell was born May 5, 1927 in Lincoln, a son of Harry and Hilda Milstedt Baker. He married Betty Whiteside in 1947; he later married Shirley Broughton in 1979, and they both preceded him in death. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. Russell was a member of the Elkhart American Legion Post #616 and the VFW. He loved reading, gardening, leather working and watching Dancing with the Stars. He was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather, and he will be truly missed by his family and friends.  Read More

Dorothy Woods Schwartz, 97, of Alvarado, Tex. passed away May 1, 2017. Funeral services were held Thursday, May 4 in the First United Methodist Church in Alvarado. Interment followed in Glenwood Cemetery in Alvarado. Vaughan Funeral Home in Alvarado handled arrangements.

Dorothy was born November 18, 1919 in Hays County near Buda, Texas to William and Mattie Woods. She attended Seton Hospital School of Nursing in Austin, Texas and graduated in September 1940 and continued her nursing career as an RN until her retirement in 1976. She married V.E. “Gene” Schwartz September 9, 1944 and enjoyed 55 years of marriage until his death in March 2000. They raised three children, Joe, Mary, and Jack.  Read More

Donald “Don” LeRoy Hilton, 62, of Mount Zion passed away at 2:43 a.m. Sunday May 7, 2017 in Decatur St. Mary’s Hospital.

A service to celebrate Don’s life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 12 in Lovington Church of God. The family will receive friends for a time of visitation from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, May 11 in the Lovington Church of God community center. Don will be laid to rest in Keller Cemetery in Lovington.  Read More

On Tuesday, April 28th, under the direction of Dr. Ian Kinkley, Band Director, the Sullivan Band Program presented its symphonious Spring Band concert, titled “Evening Escapes,” which showcased the magnificent and diverse talents of the Sullivan 6th, 7th and 8th grade bands, combined with the Sullivan High School Band and Jazz Band.
