Richard I. St. John, age 72, of Sullivan passed away at 7 a.m. May 26, 2016 at home with his wife and family by his side.

Funeral services for family and friends were held in Schilling Funeral Home in Mattoon at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 1 with Pastor Dennis Strawn officiating. Burial followed in Janesville Cemetery. Richard was born June 14, 1943 in Cumberland County, Ill., a son of Alvin and Edna Pickering St. John. He married Donna Driskell June 15, 1963. Read More

Helen M. Vanskike, 96, of Decatur died at 7:50 p.m. Tuesday June 7, 2015 in Hickory Point Christian Village in Forsyth.

Richard “Dick” Franklin Winings, 78, formerly of Findlay, passed away to be with his Lord Jesus Christ Saturday, June 4, 2016 in his son’s home in Vonore, Tenn.

Born July 18, 1938 in Findlay, he was a son of Virgil and Dollie Johnson Winings. Richard was a faithful Christian man and witness. Devoted to family and friends, he was a faithful provider to family, working at Caterpillar Tractor Co. for 33 years and helping rural farmers planting and harvesting crops. He was a man of great integrity that you could bank on his word. He would give the shirt off his back and then some. He loved the outdoors in God’s creation and was a lover of animals. He served God in singing, witnessing and doing mission trips. Richard was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church in Shelbyville and served in the Illinois National Guard. He married the love of his life Jean Pearl Byrley August 14, 1960 in Findlay.   Read More

Dale W. Sunderland, M.D., 94, of Decatur, passed away Wednesday, June 1, 2016 in Decatur Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Sunderland was born in Fisher, Ill., a son of Glade and Zora Moore Sunderland. He was raised on a farm at the edge of Fisher during those early years. He graduated from Fisher High School in 1939. He was very active in high school, both athletically and musically. He sang in the Glee Club and boys’ Glee Club, sang solos and was active in the male quartet. He played basketball, and he was captain during his senior year. Read More

She died at 9:36 a.m. Thursday, May 26, 2016 in Fair Havens Christian Home in Decatur.

Ina Mae Buxton, 95, of Sullivan, passed away at 5:05 a.m. Friday, May 27, 2016 in Mason Point in Sullivan.

Celebration of Life services were held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in Reed Funeral Home in Sullivan with burial in Greenhill Cemetery in Sullivan.

Mrs. Buxton was born September 19, 1920 in the family home east of Allenville. She was a daughter of Clem and Myrtle Lawhorn Goddard. She married George W. Buxton in August of 1935 in Terre Haute, Ind., and he preceded her in death in August of 1981. Ina worked as a cook in the Sullivan school lunch program for 16 years. She was a checker with Ken’s IGA, a bookkeeper for O.P. Morrison Trucking and worked for Kaiser Ag Chemical until her retirement in 1985. Ina was a member of Sullivan First Christian Church, Moultrie County Home Extension and enjoyed going to the Sullivan Senior Center. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, playing cards, and being surrounded by her family and friends. Read More

BASO Car Show a success

The Bethany Advocates and Support Organization hosted its annual car show on August 22 at Crowder Park. The perfect afternoon weather bought out 52 entries and many enthusiastic onlookers. Greg Fitzgerald’s 1966 Pontiac GTO took home Best off Show honors.
