For three quarters Tuesday night, Sullivan’s boys basketball team went toe-to-toe with the No. 10 class 1A Arthur-Lovington Knights. But a 23-point fourth quarter performance by the Knights along with going 17-of-27 from the field compared to Sullivan’s 1-of-10, proved too much, as AL defeated Sullivan in each team’s season opener, 72-55.

Second-half letup almost results in loss

Last Thursday night, Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond won by a slim margin after holding a double digit lead at halftime over Casey-Westfield. History repeated itself the next day.
The Lancers held a 21-11 lead at the break over Monticello in Arthur, due in large part to eight points from junior guard Emily Seegmiller in the second quarter.
“I just told myself to keep going,” Seegmiller said. “I wasn’t just shooting for myself; I was looking for other people as well, and I just got some good looks.
“Emily is a good athlete and she was being aggressive tonight,” Lancers head coach Craig Moffett said. “In the first game of the season she scored in the low single digits, and I told her to be patient and aggressive, and these last two games she has really come out when the other teams have adjusted to Sherelle. She, as well as Alex (Miller), got some good scores down low in the first half, and that really helped us.” Read More

11 turnovers in first hard to overcome for T-Wolves
by Kirk Whitaker
Arthur/Sullivan Reporter
Sullivan never trailed against Okaw Valley in their non-conference meeting last Thursday in Bethany, which had a turnover in the style of play compared to their first game against Teutopolis.
By the end of the first quarter Sullivan forced more turnovers (11) than they did the whole game Monday (eight). Junior Emily Neuhauser and senior Maggie Plank each accounted for three steals in the first quarter.
“Our effort was greatly improved from Monday,” Redskins head coach Sheri McCain stated. “The girls came out ready tonight. I don’t know if they were quite ready for T-town, but we turned it up a notch on defense tonight. We wanted to start with our press and get some deflections. The whole goal was to get easy buckets and get out ahead, and they did a fabulous job.” Read More

Returning super sectional team
devours Sullivan
by Keith Stewart

Sullivan opened the season Monday night at powerhouse Teutopolis–as in, the Teutopolis that graduated zero seniors from last year’s team that reached the super sectional and lost to Nashville by seven points…Nashville, as in the team that went on to win the state championship. And as if to be loud and clear of their intentions this year, T-Town’s caliber was clearly still in tow as they cruised to a 67-24 win over Sullivan.
“They play exceptional basketball,” said head coach Sheri McCain. “The tradition down here, it is what it is, and that’s why they’re a great team. In one aspect, it’s tough to play them at the beginning of the season, but the next aspect is it’s going to be one of the best team’s we’ll see all season.” Read More
