Boys finish second behind Lehman’s second place

Competing at home and in recognition of their seniors, the SOV cross country team hosted Shelbyville, Tuscola, and Arthur/Lovington for their final meet at Tabor Park for the season.
Boys and girls ran together Tuesday evening, with SOV’s girls finishing six in the top 10 to easily take first place, while the boys were led by junior Ethan Lehman, who after battling with a group of Shelbyville runners throughout most of the three mile trek catapulted to second place. Read More

SOV does what no other team this year has

Coming into last Friday night’s matchup, Monticello’s defense had been touted as one of, if not the best defenses in the area. And rightfully so.
Allowing just over an average of six points per game through five weeks of football, the Sages had made a name for themselves among OVC huddles. They were even plastered across the front of the Decatur Herald and Review’s sports section earlier that day.
But none of this seemed to matter to SOV’s football team, who travelled to Monticello as the expected homecoming appetizer and though, yes, did lose, posted 14 points, the most any team has scored on the Sages this season and nearly half of what they had allowed all year, not to mention, making for a game that was either team’s win or loss up until the final minutes of the fourth quarter. Boyer injured, hopeful to return

The struggles continued for the Sullivan Lady Redskins (5-15) as they faced off against Warrensburg in Sullivan Thursday, with hope that some home cooking would help them get another mark in the win column. Sullivan won the first set 25-19 but fell in the following two sets 27-29, and 25-16 and lost junior hitter Brittin Boyer to an apparent ankle injury late in the second set after she and senior Alex Love collided. Titans put up fight, but ultimately fall

Just as they did in all their previous wins this season, AL-AH scored over 35 points on their victims Friday night.
The Knights opened the first quarter on a traditionally hot start as seems to be their forte but in what was also the most unorthodox way of doing it yet.
After junior running back Steven Wright ran in from six yards out on the Knights’ first drive of the game—in which they exclusively ran the ball down the Titans’ throats—AL kicked off and the ball hit a Tri-County player with the Knights recovering. Read More

Despite second half possession, Knights unable to score

St. Anthony head soccer coach Scott Demers wasn't happy with how his upper classmen were playing Tuesday afternoon so he benched them.
In their place went freshmen and sophomores.
Whether you agree with the move or not, it paid off for the Bulldogs when freshman Donovan Hammer scored on a cleanup after a loose ball found its way in the Knights' box with 5:29 remaining in the first half.
"We had an issue with going for the ball so I took out our starters and put in freshman," said Demers. "The seniors, the starters showed they didn't want to play, or their focus was on personal matters. Read More
Without Decesaro, changes made

As the Okaw Valley volleyball team soared above the Martinsville Blue Streaks to win their 12-25, 25-23, 25-17 match on Tuesday, they learned that the willingness to change is always beneficial.
In the absence of setter Mollee Decesaro, the Lady T-Wolves were shaken up for the first game trying to fill her shoes and get comfortable fulfilling different roles. Read More
Unity run game prevails

Friday’s game is so far, and likely to be, SOV’s worst game of the season, at least when looking at the score, a whopping 0-50 loss at the hands of perennial football powerhouse Tolono-Unity, who was ranked No. 7 in class 3A heading into the contest.
But if there was ever a score that was misleading, it was in fact Friday’s, for the game was not complete dominance as the scoreboard suggested.
After stopping Unity on fourth-and-one on their opening drive, the Redskins put together what would be their longest series of the game, consisting of six first downs, marching all the way to the Unity 18-yard line, before turning the ball over on fourth-and-12.
“That first drive, we came out with trying to run the ball right at them and develop the mentality that’s been successful for us and not making some very smart play calls,” said Unity head coach Scott Hamilton. “They got us off balance, had us jump a couple times but in the end, we made some big plays and got the stops when we had to and then we were able to move down the field.” Read More

For the second and final time as a co-op before Atwood-Hammond joins next year, it was Arthur-Lovington high school’s homecoming; and for the second and final time, the Knights won on their homecoming.
“We had a great atmosphere for homecoming,” Knights head coach Dale Schuring said. “We had a lot of people here, and our seniors definitely fed off that.”
For the fourth time this season the Knights dropped more than 40 points on their opponent. The Knights (4-1 1-1 LOVC) stand in second in the LOVC behind Cerro Gordo-Bement, who handed AL their only loss of the season so far. Read More

Sullivan finishes sixth

With a record of 13-0—a school record accomplished after last Thursday’s victory over Cerro Gordo—the Arthur-Lovington Lancers took their perfect record into the Arcola Invitational Saturday, but with a slightly different lineup.
Junior Jessica Davis fractured the tip of her right ring finger and was unable to play in the tournament Saturday.
But that didn’t stop the Lancers from opening the day bright and early facing a pumped up Arcola squad. Read More
