OVMS Dismantles Shelbyville for Opening Win

Both the seventh and eighth grade OVMS girls basketball teams defeated Shelbyville Thursday evening to begin the season 1-0.

The seventh grade squad got out to a quick 8-2 lead in the first, and proceeded to score seven points in the second followed by six in the third. They capped off the game with 14 points in the final quarter, all while holding Shelbyville to just one more point on their way to a 35-3 blowout.

Bella Benning went 5-of-20 from the field, scoring a team high of 11. Madison Voge went 4-of-11 for eight points, and teammate Kate Jeffers went 4-of-10, also for eight.

First win over Raiders since A&M formed

After getting blown out by Maroa-Forsyth last week, SOV had to prepare for Central A&M, whom the Redskins had never beaten before. The stakes were even higher, due to the fact that this was the homecoming game for the athletes from Okaw Valley.

“Okaw Valley really does a great homecoming, and our kids do enjoy going over and participating in it,” Redskins head coach Charles Brown said. “The atmosphere was great today.”

Despite whatever distractions may come from the school festivities, Brown said his boys prepared well this week, and the evidence of such showed late in the first quarter as SOV drove down the field. Read More

Sullivan takes third in triangular

Improving to 13-3 on the season, the Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond/Arcola golf team shot a combined 167 at home Monday evening, easily ousting second place Altamont, who shot a 201, and third place Sullivan, who shot six strokes back at 207.

The Purple Rider Knights’ Chris Davis was the triangular’s medalist with a 39 after nine holes. Teammate Noah Yantis was just two strokes back with a 41, followed by Clayton Miller’s 42, Cole Drake’s 45, and Robert Hill and Shandon Herschberger’s 48s. Read More

Tri-County “Pokes the Bear”; Lancers Hand Them First LOVC Loss in Five Years

After Arthur/Lovington’s two-set win over Atwood-Hammond Monday night, Lancers head coach Val Cornwell said her girls were ready for rival Tri-County.

The Lady Titans finished third in the state in class 1A last year and hadn’t lost an LOVC match in five years.

In the first set, the Lancers proved their preparedness.

AL started out 3-0, but after that, the majority of the first set was back and forth. With the game tied at 14, the Titans set up an attack that Lancer senior Hannah Schrock blocked to give the Lancers the lead and the momentum for the rest of the match.  Read More

Chances of making it three wins in a row dashed

The Okaw Valley Timberwolves volleyball team lost in a conference matchup on Tuesday to the Bement Bulldogs in a 25-19; 17-25; 21-25 match.

The Lady T-Wolves started out ahead in the first game by executing their plays well despite a few rotation and miscommunication errors. After an OV timeout, Bement began to gain momentum and the two teams battled back and forth. But OV made some more strong plays to cause Bement to trail as they made their way to a win, taking the game 25-19. Read More

SOV Hosts Real Men Wear Pink Game

Sullivan Okaw-Valley will be supporting breast cancer awareness during its varsity football game at 7 p.m. Friday. 

Football players and supporters will wear pink at the game in order to encourage their mothers, aunts, grandmothers, and other female friends and family members to get biennial mammograms once they reach the age of 50. SOV is supporting the cause in other ways as well: “Paint the Stands Pink” for Friday night’s varsity football game. Survivors, family members or anyone who knows someone who has been touched by breast cancer, should unite in the end zone by 6:45 to form a “Pink Tunnel” through which the varsity boys may run as they take to the field. There will also be donation buckets and pink items at the entrance of the game.

This is the seventh year for Real Men Wear Pink, a breast cancer awareness campaign carried out by St. Mary’s Hospital. Men, as well as women, are encouraged to wear pink each Friday during the month of October.

Maroa-Forsyth's quarterback Jack Hockaday demonstrated Friday night that he doesn't have to be on offense to score.

The junior who helped lead the trojans to a class 2A state title last year as a sophomore, recorded 77 yards rushing, including two touchdowns and 239 yards passing, responsible for another two scores, but then had an interception and run back for the Trojan's final points Friday in the third quarter. Lancers Sweep Own Tournament to Improve to 8-0

Third straight accomplishment for Cornwell and company

For the third straight year the Arthur-Lovington Lancers swept their home tournament, defeating Deland-Weldon, Cowden-Herrick, Villa Grove, and Atwood-Hammond.

The Lancers exhibited dominance at times throughout the day but weakness at others.

The biggest challenge for the Lancers came in the 8 a.m. opener against Deland-Weldon, who incidentally forgot some jerseys and had to wear the Lancers’ basketball uniforms to play.  Read More
