On a brisk Saturday four of the area’s best softball teams battled for the top spot in the Sullivan Invitational.
Mt. Zion impressed with a 12-1 win over Cumberland in the tourney opener followed by a 14-4 win over Okaw Valley in the championship. Sullivan dropped their first game 10-0 to the Lady Timberwolves; then fell against Cumberland 13-8.
Okaw Valley head coach Dave Benning celebrated the 100th win of his career in the first game. Afterwards Benning said he was pleased with the team’s overall performance considering the quality of their opponents. “All in all I am pleased with the effort. We hadn’t played in eight days, and I was really impressed with how our bats came out in these conditions. I am really happy for the girls.”
Okaw Valley relied on a pair of terrific performances offensively to prevail over Sullivan.
Kaylin Boyer and Natalie Jeffers had career days at the plate. Boyer set the tone against Sullivan with a stand up triple on a line drive just over the outstretched hand of the right fielder in the top of the first. Jeffers followed with a single to drive home her first of five RBIs in the contest. Read More

The Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond softball team faced Argenta-Oreana on May 6 with the Bombers coming out on top 14-3.
Logan Kauffman got one hit in four at bats. Shelby Frederick got two hits including one double and a base on balls. Madison Corum scored following Frederick’s double in the sixth.
Mycaela Miller had two hits with one double and one RBI while scoring one run.
Taylor Powell got a home run, two hits, two RBIs and one run. Read More

The Redskin Invitational was held in Sullivan Tuesday, May 3 with Shelbyville winning the male team score with 89 points.
Following Shelbyville in second was Tuscola, Warrensburg-Latham, Sullivan Okaw Valley SOV, St. Teresa, Cumberland, Arcola, Arthur Lovington Atwood Hammond ALAH, Meridian, Central A&M CEAM.

100 meter dash: first Jason Duncan St. Teresa 11.48, second Zane Uphoff SOV 11.87, third Luke Schinzler CEAM 11.88, fourth Tony Salinas Arcola 11.91.

The Sullivan Okaw Valley girls’ track team finished in sixth place with 41 points at the Central Illinois Conference Meet held in Sullivan May 6.
Second places-Ashlynd Risley in the 400 in 1:03 and the 4 x 400 relay of Anne Hogan, Laine Cameron, Alyssa Marshall and Risley in 4:21.
Cameron finished fifth in both the 100 and 300 hurdles in times of 17.9 and 51.3. Also finishing fifth was the 4 x 100 relay of Cameron, Risley, Zoe Ray and Danielle Hill in 54.8.
The 4 x 200 relay of Hogan, Ray, Hill and Carlin Nuzzo was sixth in 1:58. Seventh places to Hill in long jump at 15-5, Nuzzo pole vault 8’0, Marshall 800 in 2:35, Risley in 100 at 13.6. Eighth places to Ally Elzy in discus at 93-1 and Ray in long jump 15-5.
Overall results at the CIC meet had St. Teresa first with 169.5 points, Central A&M second 154, Clinton third 110, Warrensburg Latham fourth 88, Tuscola fifth 65, SOV sixth 41, Shelbyville 33.5 and Macon Meridian eighth 32. Read More

Arthur-Lovington/Atwoo-Hammond baseball played Argenta Oreana May 6 at home, with the Bombers getting the upper hand with a 20-1 score.
The first inning was 3 to 1 with Waylon Schlabach hitting a home run for the Knights. That was the last ALAH score.
The Argenta Oreana team came up with 10 runs in the second inning, two in the third, and five in the fourth.
Brown got the the win pitching five innings, allowing five hits and one run with eight strikeouts.
Cory Griffin took the loss pitching 1.1 innings, allowing three runs off six hits. Read More

The Redskin Invitational track meet in Sullivan May 3 hosted 10 schools with Central A&M finishing first among the female teams with 129.5 points.
Warrensburg-Latham WALA was second, Arthur Lovington Atwood Hammond ALAH finished third, Tuscola fourth, Sullivan Okaw Valley SOV finished fifth followed by St. Teresa, Shelbyville, Meridian, Cumberland and Arcola.
