After Five Years, Brown Hands Over Reins

News Progress Posted on December 18, 2013 by webmasterMarch 29, 2014

Will remain on as athletic director

by Kirk Whitaker
Arthur/Sullivan Reporter

Five years ago Charlie Brown left Rochester—a team who would win four consecutive state championships and produce two Division I caliber quarterbacks in Sean Robinson and Wes Lunt—to rebuild a Sullivan Okaw Valley football program that had eight wins in its previous 10 seasons. On top of the lack of winning, SOV was coming off back-to-back 0-9 seasons and two coaches in the last two seasons.

“Really, the key to my taking the job was getting to be the athletic director as well as being the head football coach,” Brown stated. “Being athletic director was something I wanted to take as my next step, and it also had to be something for me to look forward to in order to leave Rochester.” Read More

Allow 0-13 run in fourth for lackluster finish

by Keith Stewart
keith@newsprogress.com

It was apparent from the reaction to her team’s win Monday night over Warrensburg-Latham that Sheri McCain is all for creating an elite team, not just a winning one. For most coaches a 53-39 victory would be seen as a good night, but for McCain, it fell short of what are increasing expectations. Read More

Lady T-Wolves Make it Five in a Row

Improve to 6-1 on the season

by Emily Scott
Bethany Reporter

It was a tough match-up of two nearly equal teams on Thursday when the Okaw Valley Lady Timberwolves faced off against Altamont.

But due to their intensity and defensive press in the second half, OV was able to nab their fifth win in a row, winning 50-42.

Altamont came out with good ball movement whereas Okaw Valley lacked in it. Nevertheless, it was a back-and-forth game from the start. Read More

Thanks be to Williams’ 11 fourth quarter points

by Kirk Whitaker
Arthur/Sullivan Reporter

In the fourth quarter of Tuesday night’s non-conference bout between St. Teresa and Arthur-Lovington, St. Teresa senior Christian Williams showed why he already has a scholarship offer to a Division I school under his belt and is garnering interest from multiple top-tier Division one schools, including the University of Illinois, after leading his team in the fourth quarter to a 51-48 comeback victory. Stain and Company Overcome Early Shooting Woes to Topple OV 53-38

OV’s shooting unable to catch up

by Kirk Whitaker
Arthur/Sullivan Reporter

Okaw Valley against Sullivan has been a heated rivalry in any sport the two teams aren’t co-opped in during recent seasons. The Timberwolves came into Tuesday night’s contest off a loss against Central A&M while Sullivan earned its first win of the young season at Windsor in which the ‘skins held the Blue Devils to 28 percent shooting.

Yet, in the beginning of the game both teams shot atrociously—from the 6:30 mark to 2:41 to go in the first quarter, neither team scored. Read More

Mental Breakdown for Beleaguered T-Wolves Against A&M

Both post and perimeter shooting key for Raiders

by Keith Stewart
keith@newsprogress.com

Coming off a win against Shelbyville Friday night in Findlay, the Okaw Valley boys’ basketball team wanted to make it two in a row, hosting Central A&M Saturday in Bethany.

“That was the highlight of the night–that’s what we put on the board before the game, being mentally tough enough to turn around twice and play two good back to back games,” said OV head coach Tony Sparks. “And we just didn’t do it.” Read More

Sullivan Snaps Lancers Win-Streak with Win Saturday

News Progress Posted on December 11, 2013 by webmasterMarch 29, 2014

Victory off double-double from Boyer, 20 from Neuhauser

by Kirk Whitaker
Arthur/Sullivan Reporter

Coming into Saturday’s matchup between AL-AH and Sullivan both teams were on hot streaks: the Lancers were undefeated to date, and the Lady Redskins were on a four game win streak after being crushed by Teutopolis on opening night.

Early on the two teams played back and forth, but Sullivan held a 12-10 advantage. The Redskins got to the foul line early and often, but the free throws didn’t fall as often as Sullivan hoped. Read More

Early 3-point barrage a helping hand for AL

by Kirk Whitaker
Arthur/Sullivan Reporter

Friday night Meridian suffered a double-whammy, losing to Riverton by one point, and losing all-area player of the year candidate Brock Snarski to an ankle injury. Snarski scored 25 points for the Hawks before his injury, but the following night when undefeated Arthur-Lovington came to town, the senior was unavailable for play. Read More

Lady Redskins Earn First Conference Win Against Warriors

News Progress Posted on December 4, 2013 by webmasterMarch 29, 2014

Central A&M comes to town Thursday

by Kirk Whitaker
Arthur/Sullivan Reporter

The Sullivan Lady Redskins have become accustomed to holding standout players and teams as a whole to low point totals. Last Tuesday the Redskins held all-area candidate Taylor Edwards to eight points. A week later, Sullivan held Tuscola to 46.

And in spite of junior scoring ace Emily Neuhauser knocking down only six of the Lady Redskins 65 points against the Warriors—tying their season high—the win gave them a 1-0 start in Okaw Valley Conference play. Read More

Poppies to honor those who gave all

News Progress

On Friday, May 22nd, Ruth Keown, Vice-President of the Sullivan American Legion Auxiliary Unit 68, greeted the public at the entrance to the local Post Office, distributing Memorial Poppies. Each year, millions of Americans wear these Memorial Poppies in memory of American service members who lost their lives in war while serving their country, and to assist those Veterans who are now hospitalized or in rehabilitation, suffering from wounds and illnesses. Memorial Day poppies distributed by the American Legion symbolize the ultimate sacrifice made by service members and are a tribute to those who lost their lives in war. Wearing the poppy is a way to honor the fallen and ensure their bravery is never forgotten.
